You can't really talk about American documentary filmmakers without mentioning Ken Burns. Practically an institution at PBS, Ken Burns has created sprawling, research heavy, detailed documentaries about monumental moments in the country's history, including "The Civil War," "Jazz" and "Prohibition" (he's not one for fancy titles). He's also turned his eye from time to time to sports, with "Baseball" and "Unforgiveable Blackness: The Rise And Fall Of Jack Johnson." And some stories it seems are worth telling again with a bit of cinematic flair, as the latter is headed for the miniseries treatment.

Of all the success HBO has had in recent years, particularly by drawing Hollywood stars and auteurs into their fold, one could arguably trace their new network dominance back to 2001's "Band Of Brothers." The acclaimed ten-part, eleven-hour miniseries from producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks picked up six Emmys, a Golden Globe, a Peabody and many more honors, and was a big audience draw in addition to being a massive critical success. It spawned a side-series, "The Pacific," and overall continues to be one of HBO's crown jewels. So is it any surprise they want more?

“Cloud Atlas,” the sprawling and epic adaptation of David Mitchell’s celebrated, heady and dense novel, screened last night at the Toronto International Film Festival. An unorthodox arrangement, as it was directed by the Wachowski siblings, Larry and Lana, plus German filmmaker Tom Tykwer (“Run Lola Run”), at a cost of over $100 million, “Cloud Atlas” is the most expensive independent film ever made (i.e. outside of the studio system and from a triage of financiers).

For a while, it looked like we had the 2013 Oscar host locked down. After a disappointing few years (Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin felt constrained, Anne Hathaway and James Franco were a flat out disaster, and Billy Crystal was kind of creaky last year), it seemed like we'd be getting some fresh blood, and that did seem to have been the case: "Saturday Night Live" mastermind Lorne Michaels was said to have been approached, and was planning on bringing on one of his former stars, "Late Night" host Jimmy Fallon.

A pleasant surprise arrived today in the form of a lengthy trailer for "Cloud Atlas," the much-anticipated adaptation of David Mitchell's novel by The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer. Anyone who's read the book -- a sprawling, genre-hopping, puzzle-box of a story -- will know it's a tough nut to crack, but the clip, now available in HD at Apple, suggests that the filmmakers have managed to handle the diversity of the visuals even if it's yet to be seen if the film works as a whole.

Well, damn. After a prolonged period of radio silence, this week has seen a flurry of activity regarding "Cloud Atlas," the adaptation of David Mitchell's acclaimed best-seller by Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer and Andy Wachowski. On Tuesday, it was announced that the film would make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, yesterday saw the first images start to leak out, and overnight, the first trailer for the film leaked online (courtesy of JoBlo). And, boy, what a trailer.
