Well, it looks like the series spawned by Marc Webb will accomplish what Sam Raimi failed to do: get to four films. With a trilogy long expected, the expansion to a fourth film is certainly big news -- especially when the second movie hasn't dropped yet -- and perhaps speaks to Sony's confidence in the series, or their desire not to be left behind in the superhero race.

Has there ever been any franchise quote like the "Fast And Furious" films? Since Justin Lin took over the series, the grosses have risen with each installment. His "The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift" collected $158 million globally seven years ago, and now, three movies later, "Fast And Furious 6" is set to gross over $170 million domestically within its first eleven days of release. Even with two challenging newcomers in the marketplace, this latest installment held the top spot for the second weekend in a row, and should become the second film in the series to cross half a billion in global gross within days (it currently rests at $480.6M globally).

After Sony failed to make good on its promise that the “21 Jump Street” sequel would shoot last fall, we were disappointed, but never truly doubted that we would be seeing a second film. You don’t just leave critically acclaimed and commercially successful stuff like that alone nowadays. Anyway, it looks like our faith has been justified, and a sequel is still in the works.

It was only last week that Brad Pitt was confirmed to lead David Ayer’s WWII tank movie “Fury,” but it looks like the A-list star was all the distributors needed to pick up the movie because it now has a home and a release date all set.

One of the most prevalent trends in Hollywood over the past few years is the incessant need to alter classic works like "Alice In Wonderland” or fairy tales like “Snow White” and turn them into giant, ponderous blockbusters. We’ve already had the overblown take on a Grimm fairy tale with “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters,” and next month sees the release of the similarly overblown “Jack the Giant Killer.” Well, prepare for yourself for the blockbuster take on Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist.”

There has been a lot of speculation about why Sony has been taking their time in getting a sequel in front of cameras for "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." Maybe the studio was expecting more than the over $230 million they took in worldwide for the hard-R, adult thriller. Perhaps it's the price point, with fees for David Fincher, Scott Rudin and screenwriter Steve Zaillian tallying between $25-$35 million before a frame of film is even shot (not to mention that Fincher gets $5 million anyway as part of his pay-or-play deal if Sony goes with someone else). However, the studio has continually insisted a followup is coming...but just not before 2014. And now things seem to have gotten a bit more complicated.

The economy might be in rough shape, but major spending is taking place at the Sundance Film Festival. Relativity has already promised big bucks to promote Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut "Don Jon's Addiction" with a $25 million P&A commitment on top of a $4 million price tag. But Fox Searchlight may best them as they're reportedly set to pay $10 million for "The Descendants" writers Nat Faxon and Jim Rash's directorial debut, "The Way, Way Back."

Conventional wisdom suggests a studio shouldn’t release two films on the same date, or even a week within each other, for fear of cannibalizing business. But this weekend, Sony took conventional wisdom out back and beat the life out of it, smashing records with the nation’s top two movies. Their animation division looks like they’ll have the biggest opening in September history with “Hotel Transylvania,” while through TriStar, “Looper” is set to be a superb debut for a heady sci-fi film.

Wondering what's going on with the followup to Sony's "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," the adaptation of Stieg Larsson's best-selling novel ($30 million copies sold worldwide) that grossed $232 million worldwide, but only $102 million domestically in its 2011 iteration as directed by David Fincher?
