Generally speaking, Mike Leigh's films have usually leaned toward the realistic, with dramas that feel almost like documentaries thanks to an approach that emphasizes rehearsals to find new and authentic notes for the characters the writer/director has put on the page. But could his next picture see him deliver something more in the vein of the flamboyant "Topsy-Turvy"?

With the big question around "Before Midnight" – will it stand alongside the beloved "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset"? – finally answered (it definitely does, read our review), the next question was where the movie was going to end up. It's a tricky one. The first two movies weren't exactly big box office smashes, each earning under $6 million domestically, and moreover, for anyone grabbing the movie, they wouldn't get any home video bump from the past movies as they are owned by Columbia ("Before Sunrise") and Warner Bros. ("Before Sunset"). But, those issues aside, the movie has landed at a big home.

As day follows night, 2013 will bring another Woody Allen-directed film with an all-star cast. And barely a week into the new year, word is firming up on the director's latest. We knew already that the film, the first by the filmmaker to be mostly set in San Francisco, stars Cate Blanchett alongside Alec Baldwin, Bobby Cannavale, Louis C.K., Andrew Dice Clay, Sally Hawkins and Peter Sarsgaard, and involves a woman facing financial ruin, who comes across a man who may be able to stay solvent.

If this year's long-standing theatre run of “Moonrise Kingdom” represented a financial change in winds to Wes Anderson's other work, then the box-office windfall behind “Midnight in Paris” last year proved a hurricane to Woody Allen's mainstream success. Clocking in as the director's highest-grossing film ever with $148 million made worldwide, it was a landmark for a career already rife with many, but naturally there are entities looking to carve out a piece for themselves, as the estate of one of American literature's giants now is taking legal action against Allen for an ill-paraphrased quote.

Well, well, well -- things just got a bit more interesting for everyone figuring out their schedules for Venice and TIFF, as Sony Pictures Classics have put their stamp of quality on one of the higher profile acquisition films headed into the fall festival season.

Of all the director/actor pairings of the year, the one between the acclaimed, but so far firmly arthouse-y Ramin Bahrani, the helmer of "Man Push Cart" and "Goodbye Solo," and Zac Efron, fresh-faced star of the "High School Musical" franchise, is one of the most curious. But after festival plaudits and rave reviews, Bahrani seems ready to break out to a wider audience, while Efron, to his credit, is looking to be taken seriously as an adult leading man, showing up at Cannes with (the admittedly badly received) "The Paperboy," and attaching himself to the remake of "Easy Money" and the Nicholas Stoller/Seth Rogen comedy "Townies," among others.

Sony Pictures Classics and Pedro Almodóvar are cinematic peanut butter and jelly, a union that is never wrong and has been fruitful for many, many years. So no duh, the arthouse shingle has once again teamed up with the helmer to distribute his next film, "I'm So Excited." No word yet if the Pointer Sisters will be on the soundtrack.

Two films, picked up by Sony Pictures Classics circa the Sundance Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival, have now been slated for awards season contending release dates, and it's fair to say both could have a shot at some kind of Oscar recognition.
