Watch: First Footage From Disney Animation's Marvel Movie 'Big Hero 6,' Set For 2014 Release

If you're wondering what a geek-gasm looks like, you should probably hit your social media networks right now. Marvel, having already conquered the multiplex and set to unleash their power on the small screen with "Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.," are now seeing what the animated world can do for them. First announced at Comic-Con last year, Disney Animation is tackling "Big Hero 6," another Marvel superteam of heroes, though not as well known as The Avengers. But that will likely not matter one iota if this footage is anything go by.

One of the biggest question marks of the summer is Disney's colossal "The Lone Ranger" reboot. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Gore Verbinski, the epic western looks to contemporize the thirties pulp hero for modern audiences, with Armie Hammer donning the mask and white hat of the titular Ranger, with Johnny Depp, once again in kabuki make-up, assuming the role of Tonto, the Ranger's Native American sidekick and trusted friend. It's a big risk (like $250 million big) to spend so much money on a genre that has more or less been regulated to the sidelines. But last night at a special presentation in New York, Disney (along with Bruckheimer and Hammer, who were on hand for the event) previewed twenty minutes of footage from the movie, and made it known that "The Lone Ranger" can easily compete with all the superheroes and comic book movies the summer of 2013 has to offer.

When Disney and Pixar announced that they were attempting a "Monsters Inc." prequel that would show us what our beloved heroes Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman) were like in college, it was hard to muster much enthusiasm. After all, much of the charm of the first film lay in the fact that it was a workplace comedy, and the workers just happened to be monsters who scared human children for a living. Seeing them in college not only seemed regressive but, if it didn't succeed, could sully (ha) the sweetness of the original. But little by little as we've seen more and more of "Monsters University," the more excited we've become. With a release of the final trailer, our excitement has been solidified. This looks scary good.

Today the official title of Disney/Pixar's "Finding Nemo" sequel was unveiled, along with select plot details and a confirmation that at least one big time cast member (Ellen DeGeneres) is set to return (Albert Brooks will be back too). Andrew Stanton's "Finding Dory" will hit cinemas in the fall of 2015, which was enough for us to wonder what, exactly, the high profile sequel will mean to Pixar (and we came up with some pretty interesting answers, admittedly). Grab your scuba gear and get ready to go back down into the big blue world.

So yeah, we've said it before, and we'll say it again: merchandising, licensing, blah blah blah...it's the monetary lifeblood of major studios and places like Pixar aren't immune (please see "Cars" and the spinoff "Planes," as well the continuing "Toy Story" shorts). There's shit to sell, and that means "Finding Nemo 2" -- announced last summer -- is happening. And now it's got a title, release date and more.

“G.I. Joe: Retaliation" had every reason to fail and flop much like its bumped 2012 tentpole predecessor "Jack The Giant Slayer" which audiences turned their noses up to earlier this year. Like 'Jack' the film was pushed off its initial release date and drew bad publicity for its delays and talk of reconstituting characters that were once killed off. In fact, it was almost worse; 'Retaliation's last-minute delay was just five weeks before its debut last summer. Taken out of its initial date (promoted with a pricey Super Bowl spot more than a year ago) the film landed in March of this year.

Well, this occurrence was probably inevitable, but given the $150 million worldwide haul last weekend for "Oz The Great And Powerful," it likely made some decisions in the boardroom a lot easier. So, following "Alice In Wonderland" and 'Oz,' with the Angelina Jolie starring "Maleficent" on the way, and "Cinderella" looking to get in front of cameras this fall (though still searching for a princess), Disney is now tackling a live action (and probably 3D) reimagining of "Beauty And The Beast." Obviously.

While the next few weeks will determine if “Oz the Great and Powerful” meets or succeeds expectations, it's off to a good start. Disney insiders were long forecasting an $80 million plus take for its first three days, and they pretty much hit that figure dead on (but didn't exceed it wildly as some were predicting). This prequel/spinoff to the original “The Wizard of Oz” reportedly cost in the neighborhood of $200 million, with at least an additional $100 million in prints and advertising, so Disney’s likely hoping the film can maintain some legs and possibly perform similarly overseas to “Alice In Wonderland,” which captured two-thirds of its billion dollar gross abroad. Speaking of which, the film totaled $150 million counting foreign box office, and it's the third largest March opening ever. So again, not a bad start at all.

Maybe it's kind of a restlessness we don't understand. After a rather pitiable box-office this past winter, one of the worst on record, "Oz The Great And Powerful," of all things, is somehow poised to make around $70 million this weekend. The expensive "Jack The Giant Slayer" movie proved not all fairy tale redos are a slam dunk and it bombed at the box-office last weekend with little signs of having any legs. But, 'Oz,' a film that received middling to OK reviews at best – we called it pretty to look at but otherwise dull – looks like it will be the first legitimate blockbuster of 2013.

At a Disney shareholder’s meeting on Wednesday, CEO Bob Iger said that none of Disney’s companies are planning to develop a hand-drawn feature animated film for the big screen in the foreseeable future. This story was picked up by /Film and Collider as effectively ringing the bell of traditional animation at the Walt Disney Company. To poorly paraphrase Mark Twain, though, the death of traditional animation at Disney has been greatly exaggerated.
