How A 'South Park' Sequel Is Closer To Happening Thanks To Christopher Nolan's 'Interstellar'

A few months back, it was announced that Warner Brothers and Paramount Pictures were set to co-finance Christopher Nolan’s latest film, “Interstellar” which was an odd move considering both studios are rivals. Well Hollywood networking pays off because The Hollywood Reporter reveals what Warners had to give up in order to get into bed with Nolan again. In order to secure co-financing rights, Warners has passed Paramount the rights to co-finance the next installment of the “Friday the 13th” franchise, as well as the next “South Park” film.

In case the news yesterday that the extreme sports remake of "Point Break" was going ahead didn't remind you, nothing is sacred in Hollywood. And that means even Stanley Kubrick's iconic horror masterpiece "The Shining" needs to be franchised, because it can. Warner Bros. has no problem making the movie the centerpiece of whatever they're planning, and right now that means: prequel!

The writing was on the wall as soon as director Bryan Singer retreated to the “X-Men” franchise for next year’s “X-Men: Days Of Future Past.” “Jack The Giant Slayer” was destined to be a money-loser, looking like just another post-”Alice In Wonderland” fantasy epic but costing somewhere in the vicinity of an improbable $200 million. With Warner Bros. putting out a quiet ad campaign for the film, scrimping money off the ad budget was the only way to save face: 'Jack' is poised to take a major bath this weekend, coming in under the minimum $30 million the studio was hoping for.

After making nothing but “Fast and Furious” movies for the last five years, Justin Lin may finally get a chance to venture off into new territory. Warner Bros has won a bidding war to acquire the rights to an upcoming novel by "The Breach" author Patrick Lee, with Lin attached to direct.

Did you know that Zac Efron has a production company? He does and it's called Ninjas Runnin' Wild Productions. Seriously. And that's runnin' not running, dawg. And over the past few years he's accumulated a small slate of projects that are moving through development incuding a remake of Daniel Espinosa's breakout film "Snabba Cash." Forget sequels, remakes and superhero movies. Hollywood's newest trend is reviving dead TV shows. With "Arrested Development" and "The Killing" getting new seasons, and HBO ordering up a "Bored To Death" movie, now it's the boys of "Entourage" are set to actually appear on the big screen for the first time. And less than two years after the series signed off with constant chatter of followup movie, it's actually happening.

While "The Impossible" didn't quite become the Oscar player some might have expected (though it did earn a nod for Naomi Watts) the film established Juan Antonio Bayona as a director who could deliver big screen spectacle with ease and power. And Warner Bros. has decided to tap that talent.
