Well that didn't take long. 48 hours after Disney announced that they were dropping Sam Raimi's "Oz: The Great and Powerful" on the same date as Neill Blomkamp's sci-fi epic "Elysium," Sony has blinked.
We'll now get to see "Elysium" one week earlier, as it has been bumped up to a vacant March 1, 2013. Of course, there's nobody else there since its nearly two years away, but anything can happen and there's still plenty of time for more maneuvering as studios close off the 2012 scheduling and look further ahead. As you know, the film stars Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster, Wagner Moura and William Fichtner, and though details on the script are being kept under lock and key, we do know that it’s set 100 years in the future and will have a social commentary element. Damon will be playing an ex-con while Moura will be the villain in the film. Also on board is legendary “Blade Runner” designer Syd Mead who will be handling set design for the picture.
Production on the film gets underway this summer in Vancouver and moves in the fall to Mexico so expect lots of breathless fan set photos of trucks and trailers taken from a mile away to start cropping up soon. [BoxOfficeMojo]
