This fact gets trotted out every year, and it continues to baffle, but here it is: the biggest opening weekend for a baseball-themed movie is “The Benchwarmers” with $19.7 million. Despite the fact that no single human being has ever willingly watched that film beyond that first weekend, it’s managed to sustain that record despite a number of contemporary mainstream baseball releases. But this weekend, somehow, the adventures of Spade, Schneider and Heder have been surpassed by “42,” the Jackie Robinson biopic.

BRAAAM! 10 Trailers That Steal The Inception sound
"What's the most resilient parasite? An idea." Little did Christopher Nolan know when he wrote that line, he’d need to add an addendum: an idea that keeps getting pickpocketed over and over again until it loses meaning and ownership, and becomes simply background noise to the general cultural conversation. It's appropriate, when you think about it, and something that Cobb (and team Nolan) would likely appreciate, that the memory of this ubiquitous sound's origins are slowly fading away. The Hans Zimmer-composed ominous pitched-down “Inception” horn blast, known as “The 'Inception' BRAAAM" (number of 'r's and 'a's may vary) has been resilient indeed, an idea homaged, appropriated and straight-up nicked time and time again since its... wait for it... inception.

Did any horror movie buffs think we would ever get to this moment? That a Sam Raimi-produced remake of “The Evil Dead” (known as just “Evil Dead”; the Deadite is in the details) would hit number one? With ease, this latest version of “Evil Dead” has outgrossed all previous entries of the series, continuing a box office trend where horror remakes frontload their earnings, guaranteeing both a return on their modest investments, but also a precipitous fall down the chart in the coming weeks.

In a move likely to be viewed by studio execs as a bolstering win rather than an uneasy battle, “GI Joe: Retaliation” has overcome delays, reshoots, and narrative rejiggering to win the weekend box-office with $54.7 million. Leading on to a $132 million global haul, that leaves Paramount with a deep sigh of relief, and a newfound aim to try their luck a third time.

G.I Joe: Retaliation
“G.I. Joe: Retaliation" had every reason to fail and flop much like its bumped 2012 tentpole predecessor "Jack The Giant Slayer" which audiences turned their noses up to earlier this year. Like 'Jack' the film was pushed off its initial release date and drew bad publicity for its delays and talk of reconstituting characters that were once killed off. In fact, it was almost worse; 'Retaliation's last-minute delay was just five weeks before its debut last summer. Taken out of its initial date (promoted with a pricey Super Bowl spot more than a year ago) the film landed in March of this year.

There ain't nothing like some bad behavior to kick off a stellar weekend. You know -- by cutting class, or taking a walk of shame, or going to work hungover on Friday morning. Or, as the movie stars like to do it, by killing some dudes, pulling off a bank job, stealing a dog, and implanting a jellyfish in a teenage girl's body. Succumb to your more depraved instincts with the second installment of the "G.I. Joe" franchise; Stephenie Meyer's latest paranormal teen love fantasy; Tyler Perry's rendition of "Unfaithful;" a doc about the ultimate turn to the dark side in "The Shining;" a British heist film; and a bevy of Philistine-filled indies. And let us know your favored depiction of sin in the comments below!

Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson in G.I. Joe: Retaliation
It’s tough to say if I would be as generous with my praise of “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” if I weren’t such a big fan of its director, Jon M. Chu, but given the mechanical one-dimensionality of most big-budget franchise films, the sequel earns its critical bona fides simply by being made by a director who has sincere affection for the source material. Although its delay from the summer of 2012 to spring 2013 spawned rumors of a troubled production, extensive reshoots, and a last-minute effort to squeeze the now-hot Channing Tatum into more scenes, Chu’s follow-up is remarkably cohesive – a fun, sweeping and yet understated sequel that should whet the appetites of action fans without overdosing them on pop confectionaries before the summer buffet truly starts.

It's Sunday afternoon TV clip round-up time. Here we go. Paramount has released a new “Pain & Gain” TV spot. As Michael Bay’s take on the relatively low-budget comedic crime film, the TV spot is chock-full of sunned muscles and imminent chase scenes (hinted at through boats, cop cars, and helicopters). Based on a true story, “Pain & Gain” is about three Florida bodybuilders who become involved in extortion and kidnapping. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, and Anthony Mackie as the three “steroid-abusing knucklehead bodybuilders,” the supporting cast includes Ed Harris, Tony Shalhoub, Rob Corddry, Rebel Wilson, and Ken Jeong. “Pain & Gain” will be out in theaters April 23rd and it looks as if it could be Bay's best movie ever with a great sense of wit and knowing humor.

There isn't much you need to actually know about "G.I. Joe: Retaliation." There are no books to read, or mythology to know and hell, you probably didn't even have to see its predecessor, "G.I. Joe: Rise Of The Cobra." But one thing you should probably know as you make your decision to buy a ticket is this: the movie has ninjas. We know, ticket bought, right?

Heavy on the brawn, light on the brains – the “G.I. Joe” franchise is back. Manned with the usual selection of muscle headed talent, and the odd addition of Bruce Willis (guess he had bills to pay), the second instalment, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” is stepping up its promotion with the release of three teaser clips While former G.I. Joe-ers Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Sienna Miller have wisely bowed out of round 2, Dwayne Johnson (or “The Rock” to testosterone enthusiasts) will be subbing in to take the lead alongside Willis, and Channing Tatum, who is returning to secure the female vote.
