Christopher Nolan Is Actually In Loose Talks About Directing The Next James Bond Film

Wow. Christopher Nolan's made no secret over the years of his love of the James Bond franchise; he named it as an influence on his first two "Batman" movies, directly paid homage to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" in "Inception," and has often said that he's like to direct a film in the franchise at some point. But given that he's one of the few directors who could greenlight absolutely anything, we'd always wondered if it was something of a pie in the sky idea, despite his enthusiasm -- especially given that many, including Sam Mendes, talked about Nolan's influence on "Skyfall," the billion-dollar grossing last entry in the 007 series.

The $1 billion worldwide box office, awards nominations, and widespread critical acclaim -- Sam Mendes is having none of it following the aftermath of “Skyfall,” and his announced departure from the series. Even as Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has essentially put out a Maya-esque manhunt to convince him otherwise, Mendes is keeping strong so far, and now he's revealed a key aspect in that decision.

It won the BAFTA for Best British Film, it earned five Oscar nominations (taking home two statues), and its global box office haul was $1.1 billion. It even won big at the recent Empire awards. "Skyfall" was the seventh-biggest film of all time, grossing nearly twice as much as the next highest charting Bond film ("Casino Royale"), and the 2012 Sam Mendes-directed installment was unquestionably the biggest 007 film ever. But after a few months of hemming and hawing about whether he would take on the next Bond film -- with all fans nodding/mouthing "yes, yes, yes," with feverous approval -- Mendes decided to pass on the series and skip on directing what's known as "Bond 24."

Thought the awards season was long done? Not quite. Last night saw the 18th annual Jameson Empire Awards, presented annually by the UK film magazine, the biggest in the world, and one of the largest such ceremonies to have their winners voted for by the public. This year, there's been a big push for more recognition for the ceremony, with probably the starriest and glitziest evening in recent memory, and we were there last night to see the winners revealed.

Even those with cooler feelings about the film itself have to acknowledge that Sam Mendes' Bond movie "Skyfall" was a wild success. With a BAFTA for Best British Film, five Oscar nominations (winning two), and a global box office of $1.1 billion, making it the seventh-biggest film of all time, and nearly twice as big as "Casino Royale," the most successful 007 film before that, few could argue that it's been anything other than a triumph.

The 2013 Oscar season finally came to an end with the 85th Academy Awards. The major prizes of the night went to "Argo," which, as expected, won Best Picture, Ang Lee took Best Director, while Christoph Waltz, Anne Hathaway, Daniel Day-Lewis and Jennifer Lawrence won the acting prizes.

Back in November we asked if "Skyfall" would be the picture that finally nets Roger Deakins an Oscar for Best Cinematography. Nominated nine times ("The Shawshank Redemption," "Fargo," "Kundun," "O Brother Where Art Thou," "The Man Who Wasn't There," "No Country For Old Men," "The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford," "The Reader" and "True Grit") Deakins has never actually taken home a statue from the Academy, but that could change for his tenth nomination for "Skyfall." And earning an award from his fellow colleagues over the weekend could potentially boost his chances.

Of the many ways that Hollywood tries to flood the webosphere with materials for the films, perhaps even more egregious than the trailers for the trailers, have been the onslaught of character posters, which as we broke down last month, yielded some ridiculous results. But it seems the folks behind "Skyfall" kept one poster out of circulation, but have resurrected it just in time to you remind you that the movie is coming to home video.

By now, it's well known and irksomely tolerated that all films face the wrath of a given market's ratings board or censors if wide distribution remains in their sights. It's been a good year for the James Bond franchise. Celebrating fifty years, the series has never seemed more vibrant, with "Skyfall" becoming a billion dollar earner and the biggest 007 entry of all time. That feat hasn't been ignored by the Academy, with the movie picking up five (below-the-line) nominations and the franchise to be honored via a tribute segment as part of the telecast next month. But there's even more to get shaken not stirred about.
