So, the editing awards right? It's usually the part of the Oscar broadcast that for many is a good time to hit the bathroom, or refill on cheese dip, but to those who know their awards history, it's an important category. Usually, a nomination for Best Picture and Best Editing indicates a strong than usual shot to take the big prize, and winning the category, has often proven in the past to be the first step to victory at the end end of evening. And today, the American Cinema Editors (ACE) announced the nominations for the 63rd Annual ACE Eddie Awards, which could indicate where the votes go in February.

So here we are. The moment that basically every film fan (even if some are openly hostile to the idea) sees as their Superbowl; the announcement of the Academy Award nominations, for the 85th time, in this case. Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone took to the stage at 5.30 PST to deliver the news, after months of the usual feverish speculation. So how did things turn out?

We're about 18 hours until Oscar nominations time, but even after the DGAs yesterday and the BAFTAs at stupid o'clock this morning, there's still time for one more precursor to sneak in under the wire, and this time, it's the American Society of Cinematographers, the major equivalent to a guild award (although it's not a guild, or a union) for the directors of photography of the movie world.

This week is so awards-heavy that the British Academy Of Film And Television Arts (or BAFTA, to their mum) had to squeeze their announcement in at 7.30 GMT, a time when it's dark in the U.K, New York and Los Angeles. And while BAFTA can often back British fare over the films that have otherwise dominated the awards conversation, this year saw them stick fairly closely to the awards narrative in general, with "Skyfall," "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" and "Anna Karenina" all failing to sweep the board in the way that some had suggested (though all made the 'Best British Film' nominees).

Right next to discussing the performance of the Oscar host (this year it's "Family Guy" creator and "Ted" director Seth MacFarlane), the post-show conversation usually oscillates around the ratings. While the Oscars are second most-watched annual TV event behid the Super Bowl (seriously), the demographic that continues to be elusive are those all important youngsters, but this year it seems a push is being made not only to snare teens (again, MacFarlane) but hopefully some of the people around the world who helped make "Skyfall" a $1 billion dollar global success.

So we’re completing a year of record domestic box office returns, but it’s impossible to ignore that the international market is a hefty player, taking a bigger overall chunk of the pie. It’s not good enough for a picture to perform in America – if it doesn’t grab more than half its share from international crowds, it’s not a complete success. The proliferation of franchises and 3D have turned most American films into our most in-demand export, and it’s changed the box office landscape immensely.

Okay, we've had the lists from the high brow movie magazines, the exclusive critics groups, various newspapers and magazines, but what about one from somewhere that has a bit of pulse on what the folks are actually seeing at the multiplex? Well, MTV has dropped their top ten movies of the year, and while some may balk at the populist list, we gotta give them credit for highlighting a couple of overlooked movies.

When it first began, many, many years ago, The Playlist covered film in general, but with a particular focus on the places where movies intersected with music -- scores, soundtracks, music videos et al. And while our remit has grown over time, it's still something we take a particular interest in. After all, it's hard to think of major movies in which music doesn't play a key part, from a piece of score elevating a key sequence to a pop song that becomes inextricably linked with a film until the end of time.

The weekend after Thanksgiving is usually a down time, but studios ordinarily have a big bopper out during this timeframe. But this opening frame for December was fairly quiet, giving "Skyfall" a chance to take the top spot one more time before this month's blockbusters hit theaters. The picture has been a monster, now becoming Sony's top grossing picture of all time, with $1 billion worldwide in its sights. The franchise may be 50 years old, but 007 has never been more popular.

Asked about returning to direct another Bond after the massive success of "Skyfall," Sam Mendes played it cool. "Do I want to do another one? I'm a shadow of my former self [laughs]. No, I don't know. I felt like everything I wanted to do with a Bond movie, I put into this film," he said last month. "So I would have to be convinced that I could do something that I loved and cared about as much if I was to do it again. I think the great risk of repeating oneself is that one doesn't have the great store of ideas that you have when you first tackle a subject." But could he be kicking the tires on it?
