Benicio Del Toro, oh where have you been? After his impressive performance in Steven Soderbergh's "Che," Del Toro appeared in the botched monster movie revival "The Wolfman" and has kind of disappeared for a while. He popped in a brief cameo in Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere," directed a segment of the forthcoming omnibus "7 Days In Havana" and this year he's set to return in what looks like a helluva role in Oliver Stone's "Savages."

Universal Pictures Argentina have tweeted the first image from the film, and it looks like Del Toro is gonna be one serious badass. In the film, based on the best-selling crime novel by Don Winslow, Blake Lively plays the gal pal of two Laguna Beach drug dealers (Aaron Johnson and Taylor Kitsch) who is kidnapped by Mexican drug cartel who wants to move in on their turf. Del Toro plays the cartel enforcer with Uma Thurman as Lively's Mom, Salma Hayek as the leader of the cartel, John Travolta as a burnt-out DEA agent, the recently Oscar nominated Demian Bichir as a double-crossing attorney who represents Hayek’s cartel, Joel David Moore as a computer nerd and Emile Hirsch in an unnamed role. So yeah, this sounds fucking awesome.

The first image is a great tease and we can't wait to see more. "Savages" opens on September 28th.

What has his private life got to do with his professional life?

i think you have a problem.

Other than Blake Lively, I'm stoked for this film. I hope she doesn't crush its soul like she did with The Town.

How do I read too many tabloids? What the heck does that have to do with my feelings towards the film? Did I bring up anything that has to do with her personal life? I think not. Nice try, though. And Bryan, every time she was on screen- she took a little away from the film. I wasn't referring to the critical score or any reviews, I was speaking of my own assessment of the film.

  • Bryan | January 27, 2012 4:49 PM

Yes her presence really crushed the remaining 6% of The Town's 94% RT score. What a film crusher she is.

    Shut up Kade.

I cringed everytime she was on screen. I think it was the lack of believability of her playing a drug addict and the accent. She came off as more of a caricature to me. Anyway, I'm looking forward to this film. Hoping to see Travolta and Hirsch in (hopefully) meaty roles. They need a hit film!

She wasn't THAT terrible. Plus she had a minor role.

I love the cast, just based on that and Oliver Stone I think this is going to be fantastic.

I use to think Blake Lively was overrated until I saw her performance in "The Town". I thought it had some good meat to it. If it wasn't a fluke, I think she'll get better with her acting as time goes on.

Please tell me that his character is Mexican? please? I actually do like him as an actor, and even though people rave about traffic his accent and portrayal was terrible in that film, terrible, go and ask people all over Mexico.

  • dt | January 27, 2012 12:46 PM

    *not mexican

  • Arch | January 27, 2012 12:20 PMReply

Hey now....Wolfman had a few decent scenes, especially considering what it was (i.e. a monster movie).

  • Bryan | January 27, 2012 11:20 AMReply

Can we not start with the whole Blake Lively debate/bashing here again. Yes, a large contingent of you don't think she can act, we get it.

This movie however looks kick ass.

  • Oogle Monster | January 27, 2012 2:56 PM

Lol it's pretty jarring how any article that involves the words "Blake Lively" gets 10+ comments about how bad of an actor she is (and I'm guilty of contributing to it as well). I think this movie looks pretty fantastic. I would be more concerned if she was the lead but I'm really looking forward to seeing Aaron Johnson since he literally kicked ass in "Kick Ass" and was pretty good in the otherwise terrible "Albert Nobbs." Interested to see what Riggins from Friday Night Lights brings to this film too.

  • BEF | January 27, 2012 12:46 PM

Agreed. I find myself rooting for her now.

  • tessa | January 27, 2012 11:00 AMReply

Except, concerned that Blake Lively has such a big role in this film... Think her film performances so far have been really overracted and forced.

  • buntyhoven | January 27, 2012 10:35 AMReply

"Joel David Moore as a computer nerd". Really branching out there, Joel.
