10 Essential Cinematic Antiheroes
It has been four years since Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi's "Persepolis" -- an adaptation of the latter's acclaimed graphic novel -- charmed and moved audiences everywhere and edged it's way into the Oscar race, sharing a Best Animated Feature nomination alongside "Ratatouille" and "Surf's Up" (a rare feat for a non-studio film, rarer still for a foreign language film). Well, the duo is back, once again adapting a graphic novel by Satrapi and for their sophomore effort they've dropped their pens and are helming their first live action feature.
"Chicken With Plums" returns to Iran once again, this time telling the story of Nassar Ali Khan, Satrapi's great uncle and famed Iranian musician, who aspires to die after his wife breaks his lute. The film tracks the last eight days before he dies, as he is visited by family, memories and hallucinations. It once again sounds like a portal into Iranian cultural with the unique perspective only Paronnaud and Satrapi can bring.
Isabella Rossellini, Mathieu Amalric, Maria de Medeiros and Chiara Mastroianni head up the cast. Check out the official logline and more beautiful images from the film below. [TIFF]
From the directors of Persepolis comes another enchanting film adaptation of a graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi. Chicken with Plums follows the last days of a talented musician’s life as he desperately seeks to replace his beloved instrument, the violin.
