While some trades had claimed that the casting of Superman's parents would be the last major pieces of the "Man Of Steel" roster to be filled out, it appears that's not the case, as one more name has boarded the project.
Deadline reports that Christopher Meloni -- aka Detective Elliot Stabler of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" which he left this year after over a decade of service -- is in negotiations to join the film in an unspecified "major role." Let the speculation begin! Could it be another villain? Our guess is that it might be Perry White, Clark Kent's boss at the The Daily Planet. Jackie Cooper played the role in "Superman: The Movie" while Frank Langella took a stab at it in "Superman Returns." But of course, it could be something else entirely and the term "major role" could be very flexible.
Meloni comes aboard a pretty character actor heavy strong cast including Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Russell Crowe and Julia Ormond. Filming begins later this year with Zack Snyder at the helm for a 2012 release.

I liked him in OZ but he's a very very TV actor. Not seeing him as Perry White myself a rumoured General Sam Lane? or Steve Lombard?
Anyway the last 3 castings have bothered me and I generally like Crowe.
You know the way we all wanted a really schlubby Jor-el?

@KT
Squat little bandy Luthor? Snyder would never do that. Never never never. I have more faith in Snyder than you do it seems. How strange

Meloni will be playing Elias Koteas as young Robert DeNiro as Inspector Henderson in the movie.

@[A] apparently we did too... you're right, Laurie was set for the role for a while but then had to bow out due to the "House" filming schedule. Our mistake, thanks for the assist!

Lex Luthor, duh.

Don't forget Amy Adams is playing Lois lane. I've seen you guys leave her off the cast list for a couple Superman casting newsbits now.

"Could it be another villain?"
Why do you tease us so cruelly, when you know it won't be anything so joyous or exciting? Do you steal candy from babies Kevin, or mock widows and orphans?

Dr House was going to play him in Superman Returns? Frank Langella ended up doing it. I think. Kinda blocked that movie in my mind.
