Well, the cinephiles at Cahiers Du Cinema and Sight & Sound have had their say on 2013, now how about something for everyone else? Leaning much more toward the mainstream, the folks over at Empire have kicked off December with their list of the greatest from the past twelve months and it's pretty safe to say that there are definitely a couple of movies on here that likely won't be found anywhere else.
"Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa" and "Iron Man 3" are two of the more eyebrow raising entries here. Okay, we'll grant the U.K. mag the Steve Coogan movie, because it's definitely something that resonates across the pond more than it does here, but the Marvel movie is truly surprising. Even those who liked "Iron Man 3" would hardly call it one of the comic studio's finest hour, let alone a contender as one of the year's best movies.
Anyway, it's no surprise to find Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" up top—from film snob to populist, everyone loves the movie—and it's nice to see some love for Ron Howard's overlooked "Rush." Park Chan-wook's divisive "Stoker" finds a place here as does Jeff Nichols' Southern gem "Mud," while the arthouse gets a nod with Paolo Sorrentino's "The Great Beauty."
