Fifty Shades Of Grey Dakota Johnson Charlie Hunnam

There's a good Labor Day and S&M joke in here somewhere, but we're still getting coffee in our system so we'll let you figure that one out, but it looks like the restraints have been put around the first cast member for your Mom's most highly anticipated erotic drama ever, "Fifty Shades Of Grey."

Universal Pictures has announced that Dakota Johnson ("The Social Network," "21 Jump Street") will take it off and get it on as Anastasia Steele. The news isn't entirely shocking—it just over a week ago that she was reported as being a contender—but this is official confirmation that should put the rumors around this role to an end. Kelly Marcel has penned the script that will chronicle the hawt relationship between hunky 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele.

Who will take the male lead? Charlie Hunnam's name has been kicked around recently, and author E.L. James has tweeted that he has indeed landed that key role, with Universal confirming the casting. Fans, what do you think?

Sam Taylor-Johnson ("Nowhere Boy") will direct the movie that is already slated to drop on August 1, 2014. Talk about summer heat...

Since I've learned who was cast I've watched some of his movies and I'll admit he's a good actor and if CLEANED UP he'd pass as Grey, but Johnson is all wrong and now that I'm reading she's not that stable casting her seems to be a cruel thing to do. This could easily be an X rated movie, so I'm guessing it will come away with an R, but even at that what her character has to indure is tough and to be honest she doesn't seem to have the depth the role requires.

  • Karina | September 19, 2013 11:14 PMReply

Alexis B and Matt Bommer!!!! OMG

  • slph | September 27, 2013 1:21 PM

I agree completely. He's Christian Grey in the flesh. Maybe he'd need to bulk up a little, but that's all. She's perfect.

  • Diane | September 6, 2013 10:05 PMReply

Charlie will do great. He's 33 and when shaved and cleaned up looks 28. I saw Pacific Rim and didn't even recognize him. He cleans up really well. I watch Sons of Anarchy and I still think he looks around 28. I'm going to give Dakota a chance since I don't know her. So I won't stone her before she's screwed up the part. I mean, if she sucks, then she sucks, but I'm not going to call that now. No one thought Jennifer Grey could do Dirty Dancing because she wasn't your typical beauty but she proved us wrong. It's all in the acting guys and I think Dakota is cute.

  • Susan Jackson | September 6, 2013 8:27 PMReply

Has anyone noticed he looks much older than 28 years. In fact I have a 45 year old son who looks younger ... seriously.

  • leslie | September 5, 2013 11:22 AMReply

Noooooo I cannot believe IT what happen? please change this .they are not good for the movie he looks like 100 years. plzzzz listen to the fans I would like to see MATT BOMER and ALEXIS BLEDEL. they are perfect team. this guy doesn't have anything like the books describe. this is unbelievable.

  • Joey | September 4, 2013 11:25 PMReply

Idiots, Ian Somerhalder and Matt Bomer are both older than Charlie Hunnam! Somerhalder turns 35 years old in 3 months! Bomer turns 36 next month!

  • slph | September 27, 2013 1:25 PM

... and Charlie Hunnam is 32 which is 4 years off, but they all look young and Bomer looks the youngest. In fact I have a 45 year old son that looks barely 30. It's all about the acting ability and the EYES.

  • Belle | September 4, 2013 3:14 PMReply

Felicity Jones was offered the role first but declined only because they asked for full frontal nudity! I am so upset because she was so close to being our Ana and now we're stuck with Dakota Johnson! Ugh. Dakota is not the tiny, delicate, big eyed, pretty featured girl that is Ana Steele. It's also reported that offers for her part when to other actresses too before Dakota. Same with the role of Christian. Obviously these 2 were not top of the teams list of choices. I can MAYBE warm up to Charlie, but there is nothing they can do to Dakota to make her the Ana Steele in the books. She may play her personality right, dye her hair brown, and have good chemistry with Charlie but that doesn't change her facial features or her body. Knowing they offered the part to Felicity makes me glad to know that they at least tried to get it right. I still think Garrett Hedlund was a better choice for Christian over Charlie (even though he was never my pick), but he couldn't commit to the whole franchise. I am so disappointed in who they ended up with. No movie for me.

Not happy with the cast. I really picture a very sexy guy , that took my breath away but this Charlie guys doesnt. And for the girl they choose I am not happy . Please change cast . Listen to ur fans E.L James.
MATT bomer and Alexis Bledel now that is the perfect cast .

  • Anna | September 3, 2013 4:32 PMReply

Xas and Dianne have great points and all this pathetic shade only confirm the level of fandom of this crap. All the respectable A-list and B-list actors REJECTED the project before. Remember the tweet by Emma Watson? Or the instant leak by Matthew Bomer? Or the known "no" by Garrett Hendlund or Mila Kunis? And the worst part the ridiculous ideas of having actors like Michael Fassbender, Anne Hathaway, Emilia Clarke and Christian Bale among other acclaimed stars in this quasi-cheesy mom-porn? A film could affect their careers in a wrong way even with the potential box office cloud?

Seriously, finally two actors will risk their reputation and future prospects to make your film and the best you can do is complaining? This project was doomed since the beginning.

  • anime freak | September 3, 2013 3:53 PMReply

OMG . I'm so dissapointed , I can't believe that Charlie is going to play Christian Grey. I thought Christian Grey was handsome and totally sexy . Charlie isn't handsome at all , to be honest , he's more ugly than the fucking creatures from wrong turn , I actually don't care who's going to play Anna Steele, I just want a beautiful man to play Christian , because in the book he is handsome, or not? I want Henry Cavill to play Christian Grey !!!!! How can I bee in love with Christian (Charlie) when he looks old like my grandpa?! How can they bee so dumb ? How can E L James be so dumb ? If she thinks that i will watch this fucking crap of this fucking movie tean she is completely wrong!!!!!!!

  • Sohini Guha | September 3, 2013 2:27 PMReply

"Charlie" who? when i saw the actor who signed for the lead, I was like "Gosh, he's so old"
Are they seriously casting this man and ruining all our erotic dreams over the wrong christian grey? If so, then i swear i'll never watch the films. Did they run out of choices? gawd, give'em some brains.

  • Hunter | September 4, 2013 10:25 AM

Old? I find that odd. I can agree that this man may be an odd choice but the actor's age is 33. By my understanding the character he is playing is aged 28. How is a 33 year old man too old to play a 28 year old? Would it be better for a 20 year old man to play a powerful businessman?

  • Dianne | September 3, 2013 11:21 AMReply

Honestly? Who cares? This whole 50 Shades phenomenon is way over. By the time the movie comes out I doubt there will be anyone but the die hards who care anything about the film. The book was crap, and I doubt the movie will be much better with EL James' involvement.

  • sue hargreaves | September 3, 2013 7:07 AMReply

I don't get charlie for christian at all, Elliot yes but definately not Christian, I wanted Ian sommerhalder.

  • Trevbull | September 3, 2013 7:03 AMReply

This is SUCH A LET DOWN. SERIOUSLY? this has to be the worst casting ever. OH, MAYBE ITS BECAUSE she has famous parents and grandparents. UGH. C'mon..

  • NOWAHATER | September 3, 2013 2:01 AMReply

  • UsedtobeFan | September 3, 2013 1:59 AMReply

GOSH! Such a major disappointment for choosing this girl ( no offense ). Like what others said, she's too OLD to be Anastasia! She doesn't even have the physical attributes of how Ana was described in the book! SUCH A SHAME! please come to your senses and choose the right one!! X_X HORRIBLE!

  • Fifty fan | September 2, 2013 11:59 PMReply

I'm warming up to Charlie, but there is nothing they can do to make me feel differently about Dakota for Ana. She isn't even pretty and I know Ana isn't super gorgeous, but she IS pretty and is petite, dainty and delicate, with big eyes and pretty features. Dakota is the opposite. She is tall, and doesn't have assets, and looks older than her own age. I don't understand this casting at all. It seem they only went by chemistry, and nothing else. I know that's very important but I don't know what makes them think that alone will make the fans happy. We do after all determine the success of this film, and not appealing to us is a bad move. Yes we couldn't all have our favs cast but had they actually casted actors that embodied the physical characteristics I think we all would be a bit happier and more accepting. I'm sticking to the books. No movie for me.

  • Sam | September 2, 2013 11:59 PMReply

    Nepotism for sure.

  • kim kramer | October 1, 2013 2:11 PM

Dont be too hard on them. I dont know how old you are but i remember when Interview with theVampire came out and ttom Cruz was going to play Lestat. I mean really i was devastated. lestat was 6 ft 4 in with long blond hair, Armond was suppose to 14 and claudia was suppose to 3 years old. but they all nailed it and i walked out of the theater toatally satisfied. That was the first I saw of Brad Pitt (who played Louie) and i was really Chemistry really counts, im anxious to see it. :)

  • Xas | September 2, 2013 5:25 PMReply

LMAO!! I'm having a great laugh for the screams and deceptions of the crazy fans. People, be grateful the studio found two actors who want to play this trash of film.

No one who wants to be taken seriously as an actor will do it. Someone who just wants to get famous will.

  • slph | September 27, 2013 1:29 PM

This says two thing to me. A. You never read the books only assumed what they were about, or B. You've got a really low I.Q.

  • Micaela | September 2, 2013 7:39 PM

HAHAHAHHAHAHA. You are my hero. That is so true.

  • Shavonne | September 2, 2013 5:55 PM

I see all the flaws of this book but I still like the basic story. I am not some dumb bunny for wanting the producers and director and writer to make a good film from this trilogy. The casting of Dakota Johnson as the lead makes no bloody sense whatsoever. I understand the material is erotically charged and it is hard to cast such a feature (not unlike casting for 'Shame), but this is ridiculous. Charlie Hunnam may he all right. The only thing that will save this feature is the direction and the writing, not Dakota Johnson's acting, which is not that good at all.

  • Shavonne | September 2, 2013 5:21 PMReply

Nepotism? That really isn't the main factor here. Riley Keough (who also isn't a great actress) is the granddaughter of Elvis and I didn't see her name bandied about. And she was engaged to Alex Pettyfer who was supposedly in the running for the role of Christian Grey. I don't think she will do this role justice as she is not that great of an actress. At all. Seriously. E.L. James should have never been given so much weight with the casting.

  • April | September 2, 2013 4:43 PMReply

  • Donella | September 2, 2013 2:04 PMReply

Tippi Hedren's granddaughter. Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson's daughter. Antonio Banderas's step-daughter.

Interesting. Not one screaming outraged disgusted snarky peep of NEPOTISM!!!

  • 5ofthem | September 27, 2013 1:33 PM

I believe for it to be nepotism it would have to have been a decision of the author, but what I do think is this four people don't give a darn about this young woman who isn't all that stable.

  • sam | September 2, 2013 1:17 PMReply

"but this is official confirmation that should put the rumors around this role to an end. "

*should*? how more can you you milk casting rumors after the official confirmation?

  • Amy | September 2, 2013 12:51 PMReply

No offense to her, but she is UGLY. She also looks too old for her age! She is no Ana Steele, God I hope they come to their senses and change this!

  • Andre | September 3, 2013 12:53 PM

God, I hope Charlie, Dakota and Taylor-Wood come to their senses and drop out of this shit.

  • swell | September 2, 2013 1:24 PM

    Your readership, The Playlist.

  • Hotter than you | September 2, 2013 1:19 PM

What the fuck do you look like?

  • Sara | September 2, 2013 12:49 PMReply

Such a disappointment. If EL James hadn't put so much emphasis on their physical appearances this wouldn't matter so much, but Dakota looks too old, too tall, too model-like, doesn't even have boobs or a pretty face or big eyes. Charlie isn't too bad but he fits more of Elliot to me than Christian and I wanted Henry Cavill, even though I knew that was unlikely. I'm more disappointed with their choice for Ana. They could've done so much better. I don't even understand.

  • ASFan | September 2, 2013 12:14 PMReply

Why do people care if certain actors don't resemble their characters from the book? The book is already trash.

BTW, Playlist, in more interesting casting news, Kurt Russell is taking Denzel's role in Fast 7.

  • Jane | September 2, 2013 11:49 AMReply

Not her please...this is worse than kristen stewart

  • b | September 2, 2013 12:43 PM

Kristen Stewart is more attractive than this girl, though. The girl is the only thing that would make me interested in a movie like this, and I find Dakota Johnson hideously unattractive.

  • Fade | September 2, 2013 12:20 PM

No, Kristen Stewart would have made it utterly unwatchable. At least this will be a rental.

  • elena | September 2, 2013 11:42 AMReply

She is not Ana at all!

  • jules | September 2, 2013 5:50 PM

she looks so old and not that inocent.... and not that pretty at all! shes not ana AT ALL!
He looks like an hot irish biker dude living in the woods... but no CG at all!
    Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just | September 2, 2013 12:08 PM

Totally agree. And please let it be NOT Charlie Hunnam. I would not even consider going to the movie, because it would ruin the perfect image created by the books

  • Alan B | September 2, 2013 11:37 AMReply

    Looking forward to this one!
