Terrence Malick's long awaited "The Tree Of Life" will unspool a week from today at the Cannes Film Festival, and the picture that had remained hidden for so long, will finally be revealed and talked about. In the past, we'd just have to wait patiently until the director decided what he would do next. However, Malick seems to have a fire lit under him as before "The Tree Of Life" was done, last fall, he got started on another film.
Details on the plot were scarce at best -- though some morsels sort of leaked last fall, but we wouldn’t put too much stock in them resembling anything what the final film might look like -- but Malick got a top shelf cast around him with Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Rachel Weisz, Olga Kurylenko, Javier Bardem and Barry Pepper all on board. In fact, a first official still hit a few months ago marking a tremendous pick up in pace for the director. But despite what we think we might know, there are still plenty of surprises in store.
In an interview with the Independent, Jessica Chastain -- who stars opposite Brad Pitt in "The Tree Of Life" -- revealed that she and Malick got on famously and she was invited to visit the set of his next film and was subsequently offered a small part in the film which she gladly took.
"The beautiful thing about Terry is that he captures memory in a way that I've never seen before, like if you want to show a life and something happening, generally you'll see a flashback and it's a scene," Chastain said about the upcoming "Tree Of Life." "With Terrence, instead of a scene it'll be an image, the perfect image, it's captured in a way where he makes the perfect film. It's hard to explain, but in 'The Tree of Life' he has created a lifetime, this journey without big long scenes. I'm a big Terrence Malick fan." She added, "I'm like a groupie, he could do anything."
Of course, given Malick's organic and unpredictable editing process, Chastain could very well wind up on the cutting room floor, but clearly he and the actress have a very easy working relationship. No word yet on when that film will get a title or hit theaters -- we'd wager 2012 at the earliest -- but for now, "The Tree Of Life" opens on May 27th in limited release and will roll out from there.
