It was only a matter of time before Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard were confirmed for Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises," but the real surprise here is that the roles are quite different than what had been rumored for the past couple of months.

Warner Bros. have officially announced Gordon-Levitt and Cotillard in the roles of John Blake and Miranda Tate, respectively. The former is a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty by Commissioner Gordon, while the latter is a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham. Hardly The Holiday Killer or Talia al Ghul both had been pegged for, which should definitely keep the rumor mills going about just what Nolan and co. have up their sleeves for the film and how these two roles will fit into the larger arc of the story.

Gordon-Levitt and Cotillard join Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Juno Temple, Josh Pence, Daniel Sunjata, Diego Klattenhoff, Burn Gorman and Nestor Carbonell in the film that gears up to shoot in Pittsburgh later this year. It will hit theaters on July 20, 2012.

You gotta be retarded if u think bruce is giving up and passing down the mantle to letvitz. I mean honestly its still a young batman. Why in the hell is he turning over the keys to the batcave to someone even younger? Do u even breath dude? Seriously thats like sayin bruce wants to wear the blue suit with the s on the chest. Come on dude. Keep up.

People are idiots to think Marion isn't playing Talia. I mean they just cast a young Ras Al Ghul for flashback scenes. Why would you have flashback scenes with Ras if he is not connected to the story in the present day with either him being still alive(Not going to happen in the Nolanverse) or his progeny continuing his crusade. A kind of Godfather Part II thing going on.

I also remember when Liam Neeson was cast as Henri Ducard, Bruce Wayne's mentor. lol.

Bane will seem like the big bad and the new leader of the league of shadows, but he is really being controlled by his lover Miranda Tate AKA Ras Al Ghul.

Seems like a pretty minor role for Cotillard... Disappointed :(

So Bane is the only confirmed villain? So much for the theories that it'd be overstuffed with bad guys. I guess this Blake character could be tasked to track down Batman, but it doesn't sound like he's pure evil or anything like that.

Guys, I totally heard that if you print out this post hold it up to a mirror in a full moon and play "Sgt. Pepper's" backwards, the true roles will be revealed.

I agree that Miranda Tate = Talia Al Ghul. Being a board member of Wayne Enterprises is a good way to close to Bruce. I was hoping that Levitt was playing a Falcone, but I figured if he wasn't then he was probably playing a rookie cop. At least I was correct about the latter. I still hope the Falcones are in this story, though.

We think to ourselves "What would drive Abner crazy" and then that's how we decide to do things.

Why are the comments in reverse chronological order?

Nice! This is great news. JGL will butt heads with Gordon who is secretly still allied with Batman, and Cotillard will be the good girl to Selina's bad girl. Both will appeal to Bruce in different ways.

Paul, you're speculating way too much. Calm down.

Nolan always keeps his real cards close to the chest. Wayne won't be relinquishing his Batman mantel; the film is called "The Dark Knight Rises" for a reasons.

Wohooo!! Let me tell you, this will be an Anne Hathaway you’ve never seen, and she’s going to knock everyone’s socks off in The Dark Knight Rises! You are going to be so killed by her performance. I can’t tell you how good she is going to be as a strong, independent, sexy Catwoman. Oh, she is going to be so good in this. It’s unbelievable the performance she is going to give. It’s amazing. Hahah.. freakin’ fantastic, can’t wait! Man! I feel like a woman!

    Makes perfect sense to me.

For Nolan's Batman franchise to truly end Bruce Wayne needs to GIVE UP the mantle of Batman & pass over the job of protecting the city to Gordon & the Gotham PD. Commissioner Gordon has always been the real hero of the Nolanverse (The Dark Knight really set that up). Giving Gordon a partner- hopefully incapable of being corrupt- is another step towards that direction.

I never though Cottilard would play Talia. Won't be JUST be coming off a pregnancy? Playing an attractive woman in a business suit would be an easier post-pregnancy role than an ass-kicking villain.

Cottliard playing a Wayne Enterprises board member can also be a counterpart to Joseph Gordon-Levitt's role. She's there to bring Bruce Wayne closer to being a businessman only & dropping the Batsuit. Would not be surprised if it's hinted (or they just go for it all out) she'll become a replacement for Rachel Dawes.

Love Marion Cotillard, very attractive and sexy. French perfection doesn’t get much purer than her.

  • emma olands | April 19, 2011 6:21 AMReply

great news!!! i can't wait to see cotillard and bale together

  • Kevin Jagernauth | April 19, 2011 6:20 AMReply

    Henri Ducard was Ra's alias.

  • Irena | April 19, 2011 6:19 AMReply

Woooo! Christopher Nolan is the undisputed best and greatest director in the world! The Dark Knight Rises will be the biggest movie ever! Watch out Avatar!

  • Cory Everett | April 19, 2011 6:18 AMReply

It's not unthinkable that Nolan is still deceiving us. Remember Liam Neeson as Henri Ducard?

  • Jacque DeMolay | April 19, 2011 6:17 AMReply

Wow, this is exciting. It definitely boosted my already considerable anticipation. These two roles sound FAR more intriguing than the villain roles originally speculated upon. Go JGL!!

  • Smash Tit-house | April 19, 2011 6:13 AMReply

Excellent. this is actually exciting news to me. i'd rather them not be shoehorned in as a million and one villains. just let the story end on a semi-believable note.
