Kevin Eastman Is Now Comparing 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' To 'The Avengers,' 'The Raid' & 'Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes'

While the Michael Bay-produced “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot continues to fight its way through leaked script drafts and halted production borne from budget issues, the spotlight has forced its way over on “Turtles' co-creator Kevin Eastman, who has the necessary job of keeping interest piqued. For him, that means name-checking every successful film of the last few years, apparently.

The series' other creative half, Peter Laird, has already put forward his disappointment toward director Jonathan Liebesman and the direction of the franchise, but Eastman has lent incessantly strong support for the film, and has now invoked the names of both “The Avengers” and “The Raid: Redemption” to drum up some more. When speaking about the influences for the film's storyline and aesthetic to NBC 5, Eastman explained, “We're talking about being inspired by movies like 'The Avengers' for scope and roots origin, 'The Raid: Redemption' for fight scenes and 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' as far as computer-quality style.”

In another interview with The Examiner, Eastman also attempted to console fans of the franchise by pointing to its history. “[If] you look at what Viacom/Nickelodeon has done/allowed to happen with the new animated TV series, and the new IDW comic series, each has a slightly new and refreshed take on the 'core concept,' the new film with be the same; a film 'well placed' in the TMNT lore the fans will enjoy,” he said, before adding, “If we learned nothing else from one of my favorite comic book based films, 'The Avengers,' that there's a lot to be said about never forgetting that core concept and core fan-base.”

The attempted Whedon parallels are intense, but also ambitious and given it's a movie being produced by Bay, keep those expectations firmly in check. 'Turtles' will eat pizza on May 16, 2014. [via SlashFilm]
