After making his name on the wrong end of the law on TV with acclaimed shows like "The Wire" and "Boardwalk Empire," the always awesome Michael K. Williams is ready to fight for the good guys in a major summer tentpole.

The actor is lining up to play Joel Kinnaman's sidekick in MGM's "RoboCop" reboot. Let us just rephrase that: Joel Kinnaman and Michael K. Williams are going to be buddy cops (kind of). Awesome. The movie, which is amassing a helluva cast and is quickly diminishing our reservations about this one, will reconfigure the Paul Verhoeven original and find Williams playing a family friend and partner of Alex Murphy. He'll be joining an impressive ensemble that includes Hugh Laurie, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Jay Baruchel, Abbie Cornish and Jackie Earle Haley. Not too shabby at all. And if this means Williams get some more mainstream exposure, hell, that's just fine by us.

"Elite Squad" helmer Jose Padilha is sitting in the director's chair for the movie will kick off lensing in September and hit theaters on August 9, 2013. [THR]

why do white bloggers feel the need to overpraise and fall all over themselves whenever writing about a black actor being cast? every time this guy or anthony mackie gets a role or on a shortlist every film writer goes crazy about how great it about just treating them like normal working actors and cutting all the nonsensical overpraise?

I'm guessing you've not seen "The Wire" in which he played one of the greatest characters on television -- of all time. There's praise all over the internet (mostly after the fact) for Michael K. Williams' portrayal of Omar. He's just now getting his due. It's great. The Playlist likes MKW and Anthony Mackie, and they're good actors. The Playlist falls over themselves for a number of actors, but it takes many black actors longer to chip away at casting, so a little acknowledgement is nice. In this case, I think they're mostly excited about the whole cast that is lined-up, which is pretty top notch and hopefully bodes better than "Total Recall."

    1) You seem upset...

    2) Have you read any of the articles they write about Fassbender, Gosling, Pitt, or Hardy? Same thing... the only difference is that the publicity machine tries to shove those names down our throats.
