Savages Blake Lively

While Universal's decision to move Oliver Stone's "Savages" from a fall release date to a prime summer slot on the same weekend that "The Amazing Spider-Man" hits theaters may seem like a strange choice, there's a certain logic to it from a counter-programming perspective. And moreover, it seems to be in the oddball spirit of the director himself, who usually doesn't miss an opportunity to provoke and challenge when given half the chance. And while we'll have to wait and see if the gamble will pay off, with just a couple weeks to go the studio has dropped a generous helping of new images of the film, giving us a chance to see what Stone is pulling together for his latest, pulpier effort.

Based on the book by Don Winslow, who wrote the script with Shane Salerno and Oliver Stone, the film follows two California pot dealers (Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson) whose mutual girlfriend (Blake Lively) is kidnapped when they refuse to surrender their turf to a Mexican cartel. And yeah, shit gets intense from there. The director has rounded up a pretty crack supporting cast including John Travolta as a DEA agent, Benicio Del Toro as a hitman, Salma Hayek as the head of the cartel, "A Better Life" star and Oscar nominee Demian Bichir as a crooked lawyer, and much more. We gotta admit we're curious, and even if it's a trainwreck, there's no doubt it'll be a fascinating one.

"Savages" opens on July 6th. Check out the pics below, which also include better versions of the Instagram-style pics that dropped last month.

I am intrigued by this film and I think that the leads - yes, including Lively - will do well. Travolta seldom disappoints. Actually, the ones I find less convincing are del Toro and Hayek. Nobody is consistently bad or consistently good.

Despite the fact that Aaron Johnson is the only one of three leads who can act, i think the movie will turn out well.

I have seen just about every movie Lively has been in- and while I'm a fan of the girl- I cannot say she's a good actress. I mostly like her b/c she's got a great personality and her fashion sense but when I think of good actresses, Lively does not fall into the mix. I recently rewatched The Town and her accent is pretty awful and there's a particular scene in the end when she confronts Affleck's character in his hotel room and none of her actions seem natural... as in, she moves her hand in one particular instance and it is so obviously written like that in the script. I just don't think she's a naturally talented actress but that doesn't make her a bad person. She has limited talent but lots of charisma, so maybe that makes her special?

Do you people actually watch Lively act or are you just doing the "BUT BUT BUT SHE WAS IN GOSSIP GIRL" routine? Not necessarily a fan but she's been fine in almost everything she's been in.

Did you see The Town? She was pretty good in that.

Co-sign. Although Kitsch showed some promise on FNL but the same cannot be said of Blake Lively.
