New Images Of Chris Pine & Kenneth Branagh On Moscow Set Of 'Jack Ryan'

The Playlist By Joe Cunningham | The Playlist September 12, 2012 at 10:40AM

The thing about Jack Ryan on the big screen is that, from a purely visual standpoint at least, there’s nothing that really distinguishes him as Jack Ryan. He could be any number of movie characters, and that’s rare for a character that Hollywood are willing to build a franchise around. So when we get a look at pictures from the set of a Jack Ryan film, if they didn’t come with descriptions attached we’d be tempted to simply peg them as ‘Chris Pine wearing a sweater while riding a motorpike’ or ‘Chris Pine standing next to Kevin Costner’. Well get ready, because you’re about to be blown away by ‘Chris Pine wearing sunglasses AND talking to Kenneth Branagh’.

The thing about Jack Ryan on the big screen is that, from a purely visual standpoint at least, there’s nothing that really distinguishes him as Jack Ryan. He could be any number of movie characters, and that’s rare for a character that Hollywood is willing to build a franchise around.

But we’re reliably informed that these aren’t Chris Pine’s holiday snaps, and are in fact Chris Pine in character as Jack Ryan on the set of the new Jack Ryan movie, appropriately titled “Jack Ryan.” The Kenneth Branagh-directed movie is currently in front of cameras ahead of its mooted December 2013 release, and the Russian edition of The Hollywood Reporter (who knew?) have got their hands on a heap of set pics.

There’s lots more of Pine’s Jack Ryan, and our first look at Branagh, though it's unclear if he's in directing mode, or in costume as the film's villain, which he's also playing (this is why distinguishing scars and cats are useful for spy movie villains...). So now we’ve seen Costner, Pine and Branagh, surely it’s only a matter of time before we get a look at Keira Knightley who will be playing Cathy Ryan – a character we last saw played by Bridget Moynahan in “The Sum of All Fears.” So far, so bland in terms of the set images but we’re sure we’ll get more excited once the advertising gears up. The film (which we think should adopt the colon missing from the "Star Trek Into Darkness" title, becoming "Jack: Ryan," a sequel to this Christmas' "Jack: Reacher,"), will open on Christmas Day, 2013.
