New Look At Matt Damon & Michael Douglas In 'Behind The Candelabra,' Steven Soderbergh Aiming For Cannes Premiere

Well, if you're gonna go out, might as well do it in a blaze of glory. Steven Soderbergh is in the midst of his final jaunt behind the camera, in production on the Liberace biopic "Behind The Candelabra," with Michael Douglas as the famed performer and Matt Damon as his young lover. But it appears he's got some big plans for this final picture, which may include one last walk down the red carpet in Cannes.

Chatting last month with Le Monde, the director revealed that while plans are still coming together for the movie, which is set up at HBO, he hopes to bring it to France next May--you can probably fill in the rest of the blanks yourself. It would be a nice capper for the helmer who has been on the Croisette before for "Sex, Lies & Videotape" and "Che," and certainly Thierry Fremaux and the rest of the gang won't say to no to hosting Soderbergh before he disappears to pursue painting and other artistic endeavors. And it wouldn't be the first time HBO has launched a movie there, as this year alone they unspooled "Hemingway & Gellhorn" out of competition.

And so while we wait, Vanity Fair (print edition only) managed to get a behind-the-scenes snap of Douglas and Damon in costume, wearing matching jumpsuits. It's pretty glorious and we're really eager to see both of these guys playing wildly against type, together in a relationship that was certainly rocky and contentious, particularly as Liberace got on in years. In case you forgot, the late Marvin Hamlisch completed his score for the movie before passing (he also tuned up "The Informant!") adding another interesting texture to the pic.

Lastly, 'Candelabra' isn't the only movie Soderbergh has brewing. He's already wrapped on "The Side Effects" with Channing Tatum and Rooney Mara, which, according to Open Road (and from what we've heard) is reverting back to its original title of "Side Effects." Sorry Ti West.
