When "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" premiered at Sundance earlier this year, the strong reviews from critics (including ours) and praise from audiences put writer/director David Lowery on notice in Hollywood. Indeed, Disney tapped him to write their reboot of "Pete's Dragon," he's writing and directing "The Old Mad And The Gun" with Robert Redford attached to star, and he's slated to helm the old David Fincher project "Torso." And soon, those of us who weren't in Park City will get to experience what got audiences in the mountain city all excited in the first place.
A new poster and a few new pics for "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" have landed in advance of its release. The film is led by Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck, and tells the tale of an outlaw who escapes from prison to reunite with his wife and the daughter he's never met. By all accounts it's a pretty terrific drama, and while industry suits have started putting Lowery's name in their Rolodex, he remains committed to the indie spirit he built his career on.
"I would make 'Ain’t Them Bodies Saints' for $12,000 if that’s all I had to do it with. The means to make things are constantly available and there’s nothing stopping me. They can be big or small, but I know that I can always make something and express myself through this form," he told EW. "I think that’s true of my peers and collaborators too. We’ve all chosen this medium outside of any industry factors. We can do it on our own. If the industry pays attention and wants to give us money or help us make a living, that’s icing on the cake, but that’s not the goal."
"Ain't Them Bodies Saints" arrives in theaters on August 16th and on VOD on August 23rd.
