300: Rise Of An Empire
It arrived much too late, some seven years after the fact. It was met with most middling reviews, and it featured no real stars to speak of. But that could not stop “300: Rise Of An Empire,” the slightly less-ripped, less-sweaty, otherwise pretty-much-the-same sequel from dominating the box office (our review here). The Warner Bros. sequel might not have been in vogue with the blogosphere, but the rest of the country was more than happy to attend.

Liam Neeson, Non-Stop
If it felt like a forgettable and rather dead weekend at the box office, that’s because it was. Studios typically don’t release major films in theaters the weekend of the Academy Awards, the conventional wisdom being that everyone’s going to be watching the awards, gearing up for the awards, and or doing something that involves preparing for the ceremony and not going to movies.

The Lego Movie
Play on, indeed. As expected, the universally beloved “The Lego Movie” dominated the box office again, taking the number one spot for the third week in a row. Only dropping 36.9% from its second week, Warner Bros.' animated juggernaut took in a healthy $31.4 million over the weekend with its domestic total now at $183.1 million. The movie has grossed $234 million worldwide so far and presumably will keep ascending, but internationally, ‘Lego’ isn't quite as gigantic of a draw.

LEGO movie
When your options are a tepidly received “RoboCop” remake and a Valentine’s Day-themed romance movie that only the teenage girl die-hards seemed interested in (“Endless Love”), is it any wonder “The Lego Movie” blocked out the competition this weekend? That said, performing quite well was the “About Last Night” remake. And no, don’t chalk that one up to ’80s nostalgia—instead, see it as one more film connecting with the underserved African-American audience who are happy to come out in droves when a movie is actually geared towards them.

Call it the power of nostalgia, and an indicator of just how much those plastic bricks are a part of popular culture. Everyone went to see Warner Bros. "The Lego Movie" this weekend, with the critically acclaimed animated film hauling in a massive $69 million, making it the best February opening since "Passion Of The Christ" a decade ago. And with huge buzz on the film, an A-grade CinemaScore and seemingly everyone falling head over heels for the flick, expect this one to stick around for a while. No wonder they are already working on a sequel.

Ride Along
In light of the passing of Philip Seymour Hoffman, talk of box office seems a bit superficial at this point, so we'll keep things a bit brief.

So, guess who really likes Kevin Hart? America. For the second weekend in a row, "Ride Along" took the top spot at the box office. This is a big win for Universal, with the $25 million comedy already crossing $75 million, and looking very comfortably at $100 million in the distance. How long until a sequel is greenlit?

Ride Along
The first weekend after the Oscar nominations is here, and what did audiences vote for? "Ride Along." The Ice Cube/Kevin Hart team up comedy made Universal very happy, pocketing over $40 million in its first weekend, marking a strong start for the movie, which should have great legs with audiences, who gave it an A-grade CinemaScore. And overall, the multiplexes were busy with audiences making it the second best Martin Luther King holiday-weekend in history.

Lone Survivor
Here's a lesson Hollywood might want to consider: Peter Berg's "Battleship" cost over $200 million and took $25 million on its opening weekend. By contrast, the tough adult war thriller "Lone Survivor" cost $40 million, and almost made up its budget this weekend earning $38 million and taking the number one slot. Just sayin' ...

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
We're in the last leg of the winter holidays and it shows at the box office with strong holdovers leading the pack. This weekend, in between Christmas and New Year's Eve, marks that wonderful time when whole families pile in droves to see those films they've been hearing so much about (Did you take Nana and Pop-Pop to see "August: Osage County"?), those who can escape to catch up on Oscar contenders. ("Her" is in limited release and well worth the drive) and an interesting third group reveling in the holiday cheer (not naming names, but we know someone over the age of 10 who saw "Frozen" for the third time).
