10 Essential Cinematic AntiheroesWith that in mind, here's the sequel's official synopsis, which is, of course, pretty damn vague. With words like "force of terror," "manhunt" and "weapons of mass destruction" being tossed around, you might think it's "Zero Dark Thirty Into Darkness." And indeed this synopsis is mostly interesting because, outside of the words "Enterprise" and "Star Trek," you might not have any idea that it's set in outer space or anything. But that's the way Abrams rolls; the less you know, the better.
Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller, the lights get turned on 'Darkness' on May 17, 2013. Synopsis below -- let us know your theories in the comments section.
In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.
When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.
As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

I don't think that was too vague. Cumberbatch has destroyed the Federation fleet in an apparent sabotage (motivated by something) and the Enterprise team go after him into a war zone (darkness).
There.

Sounds a lot like the episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before"

The burning question is what exactly is JJ a pioneer of?
