10 Essential Cinematic AntiheroesOf all the summer movies due this year, none, not even "The Dark Knight Rises," carries as much weight of expectations from cinephiles as "Prometheus." It's the first science-fiction movie in thirty years from Ridley Scott, the man whose previous entries, "Alien" and "Blade Runner," stand at the very apex of the genre. And as a spiritual successor set in the same universe as the former, the stakes for geeks are even higher.
So far, everything looks like it'll be worth waiting for. A killer teaser trailer arrived before Christmas, and now it's been followed up with a new clip that landed online in the wee hours of this morning (via Digital Spy), which is even more intriguing. Dropping a ton of terrifying, intriguing imagery into a brief 70 seconds or so (again accompanied by the now obligatory "Inception" fart trombone soundtrack), we get a look at more of the cast (which includes Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, Guy Pearce, Sean Harris, Rafe Spall, Kate Dickie and Patrick Wilson), as well as cryptic glimpses of things that we can't wait to see how they fit into the big picture.
Scott's clearly not resting on his laurels: there seems to be an intriguing mix of visual styles, including some almost found-footage clips, and even if the film ends up as a PG-13, it promises to be just as intense as its predecessors. What we're unclear on is whether this is the footage that Scott's set to unveil on Monday: some rumors point to another, full 150 second trailer coming later on today. But we're not actually sure we need to see anything else at this point. "Prometheus" opens in the U.S. on June 8th.

Is it just me, or does Fassbender look a lot like Ewan MacGregor in some of these publicity stills?

The "almost found-footage clips" just look like the same kinda helmet-cam footage used in "Alien."

I beg to differ about this film having higher expectations than The Dark Knight Rises. From some polls online, The Dark Knight Rises still stands as the most eagerly awaited film this year, followed by Prometheus in the second slot and Django Unchained in the third.

The VFX alone is head & shoulders above anything else that's been previewed. Dense, rich, eye popping.

The visuals are awe-inspiring and I'm sure the film will be brilliant.
The trailer editing however leaves a lot to be desired, not sure if the cheap wannabe Massive Attack remix of the teaser music or the nauseating Zac Snyder-esque stop-starting effect is worse. Both silly decisions which make this the weaker of the two teasers despite the more epic screen shots.
