While it was recently reported that Sam Raimi and Disney were fighting over a key female role in "Oz The Great And Powerful" -- the director wanted Hilary Swank, but the studio was looking at Michelle Williams -- another actress entirely has snagged the part.

Heat Vision reveal that Rachel Weisz has joined the film, marking a rare tentpole appearance. Starring alongside James Franco and Mila Kunis, the prequel of sorts follows Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmanuel Ambroise Diggs (a.k.a. Oz), a showman and magician at a traveling circus who flees in a hot air balloon after being caught canoodling with a customer’s wife only to be swept away in a terrible storm to wake up in the magical land of Oz, which is run by two magical wicked witches. Weisz will play Kunis' older sister who intends to rule the land and tries to lure her sibling to the dark side.

It doesn't need to be said that Weisz is a fine "compromise" if indeed the director and studio were pushing and pulling over Swank and Williams. It's a great bit of casting and a nice change of pace for the actress. The film is gearing up for a July shoot with a release date yet to be set, but likely coming in 2012.

I actually did not care about this film but now with Rachel Weisz on board, i might actually pay to see it. She's about the best casting this film has in terms of real talent.

So, wait, is Weisz the "Wicked Witch of the West" and Kunis is the witch that ends up with Dorothy's house on top of her, and the third witch cast will be "Glinda the Good Witch?"

I would take Rachel Weisz over Anne Hathaway any day of the week, especially for Catwoman.

And yes, Rachel is a better choice than Michelle Williams & Hilary Swank.

Wow, people cannot stand Michelle Williams & Hilary Swank. Tony, I don't mean to rain on your parade, but I hear Anne Hathaway's screen test opposite Christian Bale was very good- that is why she got the Catwoman role.

Rachel Weisz is hands down the best actress of our generation. She's amazing in everything she does. Compromise? she's an vast improvement over both Hilary Swank and Michelle Williams. Hell, Rachel should have been cast as Catwoman over Anne Hathaway.

Aren't there still two more female roles to be cast? Sisters of the Kunis character? If so Swank or Williams could still be in play.

Love Rachel Weisz, very attractive and sexy. I hope that she does more American mainstream movies from now on.

Yay Rachel Weisz is one of the best actresses out there and one of my favorites. This film actually sounds good and the cast is great so far. I'm glad that Hilary Swank didnt get it I just cant stand to watch her on film something about her really annoys me.

A fine “compromise”? Rachel Weisz is a better actress than both Hilary Swank and Michelle Williams. Weisz has actually played different types of roles while both Swank and Williams seem to play the same role over and over again.

Good story but there's a lot of typos in this blog post.
