Review: 'The Immigrant'Variety has word that Hall will join Gallic helmer Patrice Leconte's English-language debut with the romantic drama "A Promise," which has been adapted from Stefan Zweig's novella "Journey into the Past." Set in pre-World War I Germany, “A Promise” – which is currently only a working title -- will follow the wife of a wealthy older man who begins to fall in love with her husband's teacher, who is a young engineer with a much more modest background. Just as they begin a passionate affair together, WWI breaks out and tears their relationship apart – yet they still promise to love one another. Leconte will also be serving as co-writer of the adaptation with Jerome Tonnerre, as he continues his four decades-long career that’s included films like “The Hairdresser’s Husband,” "The Man On The Train," and "My Best Friend" – and previous collaborations with Tonnerre on films such as 2004’s "Intimate Strangers."
The tale of “A Promise” certainly sounds within Leconte’s wheelhouse, and we’re eager to see what he does with a female lead like Hall. She's currently filming “Iron Man 3,” so we’d guess that once she resigns from Stark Enterprises she’ll make her way onto “A Promise” as the film is set to begin lensing in the fall for delivery next spring. Cannes anyone?
