10 Essential Cinematic AntiheroesBased on the hit Broadway show and of course, on Victor Hugo's novel, the film tells the story of an ex-convict Jean Valjean (Jackman) who attemps to escape his past and the clutches of Inspector Javert (Crowe) as the revolution brews. Crowe looks appropriately official with a jaunty hat as he rides a horse, while Jackman seems to have re-grown his beard from "The Fountain" to help achieve his raggedy look as the dude on the run. No looks yet at the rest of the starry cast -- Anne Hathaway, Sacha Baron Cohen, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter -- but the Brit papparazzi are surely on standby.
Tom Hooper will take a second swing at Oscar with "Les Miserables" when it opens on December 14th. [via HeyUGuys]

"Les Miserables" is not set "as the revolution brews", though it's a common misconception. It's actually set 43 years after the French Revolution. The street battle at its core is an otherwise largely forgotten event known as the June Rebellion, or the 1832 Paris Uprising - a failed anti-monarchist insurrection.

I think you missed these of Jackman from a few days ago, including photos of the original Jean Valjean, Colm Wilkinson, in a small role as the bishop.

And did you see this video of the filming of a scene - you can hear some of Jackman's singing in it.
