Who Are Handsome Luke & The Hearthrobs?

"Crazy Stupid Love" may have opened this weekend, but the ever busy Ryan Gosling is already at work on his next film, reteaming with "Blue Valentine" director Derek Cianfrance for the generational grudge drama "The Place Beyond The Pines" -- and the actor is shaking up his image a little bit. Far from the clean cut, GQ dressed lothario that's currently in multiplexes, the actor has gone blonde, got inked and probably hasn't taken a shower for his lead turn in the upcoming film.

Co-starring Bradley Cooper, Greta Gerwig, Eva Mendes, Ben Mendelsohn, Ray Liotta, Ali Mahershalalhasbaz, Gabe Fazio, Max Martini and Emory Cohen, the film centers on Luke (Gosling), a motorcycle stunt rider who turns to robbing banks to support his son, but winds up crossing paths with a police officer-turned-politician (Cooper), kicking off a simmering generational feud that will also include their sons (Cohen and DeHaan) who are mixed up in a clash of their own. The director himself has said those who have read the script compared it to "The Deer Hunter" meets "The Godfather" which at the very least promises something ambitiously epic. But we just have one question: who are Handsome Luke & The Hearthrobs as crudely penned on Gosling's motorbike? Maybe he plays in a band on the side? Or more likely, it's the name of his stunt team. Anyway, we'll find out soon enough.

Filming continues in upstate New York and while no release date has been locked just yet, we'd guess that both Gosling and Cianfrance who walked the Croisette this year, will make the return trip in 2012. More pics below. [Just Jared via ONTD]

    @Vito
    I still want to see it. I loved Blue Valentine. So I will see this.
    But he's building it up too much.
    If Brett Ratner said he's making an epic film like The Godfather, would you believe it? I know I wouldn't. But if someone like PTA said that, I wouldn't doubt it.
    All I'm saying is he's hyping it too much.

    Nice to see we've written this one off before it's even been filmed yet. Way to go, cool guys.

    Sam, that's a bit much... you're almost as hyperbolic as Cianfrance. However, you're right, the script doesn't center on Gosling or anyone else. It's kind of a mess.

    BLUE VALENTINE was a little miracle. That script was pretty weak as well, but the actors & directors turned it into something riveting.

    Cianfrance may be right on the money when comparing himself to Cimino. (one great one and OUT).

    Re THE GODFATHER: Ridiculous.

    Who would compare (or mention that people had compared) their own script to The Godfather or Deer Hunter? Man, that's some chutzpah - you could say you're aiming for it or that it's likely to be epic in nature buy sheesh... cool ideas though so hey, maybe he'll pull it off.

    This just doesn't sound epic. It sounds interesting, yes. But not Godfather epic.
    Plus whats with Gosling having to play a stunt driver turned thief again?

    Sam, I'd love to trade you for that script. Do you have an e-mail I can contact you at?

    Sorry to burst your bubble, but I read this script and it is SO far from epic. I'm shocked it's even being made. First of all, it doesn't center on Gosling's character, he's more the catalyst. Second of all, the story is riddled with cliches and at times laughable. Comparing it to The Deerhunter and The Godfather is embarrassing.
