Shailene Woodley In Talks To Play Mary Jane In 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2,' Electro Could Be The Villain

Well, with director Marc Webb and star Andrew Garfield officially back for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (and Emma Stone soon, right guys?), and with a release date less than two years away, the gears on the sequel are beginning to turn. And now we have a new actress looking to board the movie, along with the possible identity of the villain.

Rising "The Descendants" star Shailene Woodley is in early talks to take the role of Mary Jane Watson in the movie. In the comics, the relationship between MJ and Peter Parker develops when she helps him grieve following the death of Gwen Stacy. Stone has already said she wants to be killed off in the franchise to stay true to the comics -- are the seeds for that being planted here? Or is it going to be an ill-conceived jumble of characters like in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man 3"? Either way, we really like the choice of Woodley, so it's moving in the right direction.

Meanwhile, as the post-credits sequence of "The Amazing Spider-Man" suggested, Electro is being positioned as the possible villain (wait, how could they not have decided this yet?). With a flash of lightning buzzing in the sequence with Dr. Curt Connors, who is asked by a mystery man if Peter knows his true father, it would seem obvious this would be the way to go. Or the filmmakers could wait until the last installment of the brewing trilogy to tie that all up.

So we shall see, but it looks like everything is starting to take shape. "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" slings its web on May 2, 2014. [Variety]

She pretty young looking so I guess she'll pull off a high schooler. I still have to see The Amazing Spider-Man. She was good in The Descendants.

They are basic and average looking because thats how people are. Not everyone has super model looking qualities. In the original comics the characters were not all amazingly attractive people. Its a movie, not a porno.

Electro is a pretty cool choice for the villain, but the sequel really has to step up from the first one or else Spidey is going to be irrelevant. Hopefully they will do better.

Isn't Mary Jane Watson supposed to be a supermodel basically and really out of Peter's league? Shailene is all right, but I don't get the fashion model vibe from her at all.
