Shailene Woodley's Mary Jane Has Been Cut From 'Amazing Spider-Man 2,' Won't Appear Until Third Movie

So, now that the filmmakers have it coming down from on high that Sony wants a fourth entry in "The Amazing Spider-man" series -- numbers three and four both got release dates this week -- are they finding their hand forced in stretching the story? Are the stories going to be stretched out unnecessarily like the finales to "Harry Potter," "Twilight" and "The Hunger Games"? Are they just making it up as they go along?

Last fall, rising star Shailene Woodley ("The Descendants," "The Spectacular Now") bagged the role of Mary Jane Watson for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." But talking recently with EW, she reveals you're gonna have to wait a little while to see her performance. You see, she's been cut out of the second movie with her part now being placed in part three -- which either means it wasn't very big to start with and will be expanded down the line, or everyone is just seeing what works on the fly.

"Of course I'm bummed," she said. "But I'm a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason....based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing (Mary Jane) until the next film."

The proposed plot perhaps means the long standing rumor that Emma Stone's Gwen Stacey is going to be killed (as she was in the comics) is true, with MJ as Peter Parker's shoulder to cry his webby tears on. Good idea? Bad idea? Hard to really say at this point without even the second movie out of the gate, but we'll see. Let us know what you think below.

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" drops on May 2, 2014, "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" on June 10, 2016 and the "The Amazing Spider-Man 4" on May 4, 2018. [via ComingSoon]

Yeah, Kevin, write all the trash you want about Twilight (and Spiderman for that matter) but, c'mon, just avoid writing about Harry Potter and The Hunger Games because you obviously know nothing about the books.

You know, it's also possible that Woodley was cut because the producers didn't believe that she has what it takes???...perhaps Woodley just wasn't that great when they watched the dailies?. So, that fact wouldn't bode well for future installments. Woodley is a good, not great actress, there isn't a lot of charisma to her performances.

This "article" is ridiculous in comparing Spider-Man to those other movies, esbecially Harry Potter. I makes the author appear to be uninformed that they were books first. And if anything they chopped the actual storylines of those for time.

I totally agree with you!! The "author" even mentioned The Hunger Games movie finally. Unless he's read the book, which looks doubtful, they haven't made the movie "finale" for Hunger Games. You are grossly uninformed "author"!

Her part has been cut as there are far too many characters in TAS2 already and they simply couldn't fit everyone in. Simples!

Simples, yes. Because the 12th villain (or tease/hint of a villain) is more important than a properly introduced Mary Jane Watson (!) in a Spider-Man sequel. It's a stupid Blockbuster mechanism. More guys in costumes, more action, more ka-boom, less normal characters, less relationship stuff, less - and sadly: most importantly - women. That's apparently how this crap works.
