Something must be in the water (maybe it was the approaching Mayan apocalypse, which never happened), because end-of-the-world comedies are very much in vogue in 2013. There's Anna Kendrick
and John Francis Daley
," Seth Rogen
and co in "The End Of The World
," and indie "It's A Disaster,
" but certainly our most anticipated of all of them is "The World's End
," the film which marks the third in the so-called Cornetto trilogy, written by Edgar Wright
and Simon Pegg
, directed by the former, and starring the latter alongside Nick Frost.
We've already had comedy classics "Shaun Of The Dead
" and "Hot Fuzz
," and "The World's End
" is set to be in the same vein, following five friends who set out to recreate a teenage pub crawl twenty years on, as they're hitting their forties, only to discover that the fate of the world might be in their hands. Wright and Pegg have managed to keep the fantastical elements of the film under wraps so far (beyond hinting that the name of the pubs could figure in somewhere), and those looking for clues in the new image that Filmofilia
have discovered are likely to come up short.
But what is front-and-center, as has been the case with most of the other stills from the film to date
, are the actors making up the central ensemble. Beyond Pegg's Gary "a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens," there's Frost as, naturally, his best friend, Andy; "The Hobbit
" star Martin Freeman
as Oliver, who was let into the group "for having a fit sister" (played by Rosamund Pike
); Paddy Considine
as Steven, "Gary's fellow rock star in training"' and sole trilogy newcomer Eddie Marsan
as Peter, who "hung around with Gary at school because he struggled to fit in elsewhere."
As to what they get up to? Well, we'll have to wait a little longer to find out, though with the film now set for an August release, we reckon we won't have that much longer to wait for a trailer. "The World's End
" opens in the UK on August 14th, and follows in the U.S. on August 23rd.
