This latest project will see him direct a script which he first wrote 15 years ago and will star Shinichi Tsutsumi as a gangster who bears a grudge towards against an older rival whose daughter he also happens to be in love with. Jun Kunimara will play the rival while Fumi Nikaido, who won an award in Venice for her performance in “Himizu,” will play the actress daughter. And knowing Sono, we're sure it will be so much more than that logline.
The film entitled “Why Don’t You Play in Hell?” is described as being a comedy actioner, and although there doesn’t immediately seem to be any obvious parallels with Tarantino’s two-parter, who are we to dispute what Sono has to say about his own script? The film is set for a March release next year in Japan, and will probably do some appearances on the festival circuit as well.
