First Look Still On The Production Arrives As Well

After boldly making her mark with 2004's expressive and poignant coming-of-age tale "Somersault," which catapulted the careers of both Abbie Cornish and Sam Worthington long before they became relative house-hold names in Hollywood, Australian director Cate Shortland has begun production on her long-awaited follow up, an adaptation of Rachel Seiffert's novella "Lore."

The project certainly isn't one that lacks ambition either, as Seiffert's story follows a teenager (Saskia Rosendahl, seen here in what seems to be our first look at the production) who leads her four siblings — all children of an SS commander — hundreds of kilometers across the war-ravaged countryside to their grandparents in Hamburg shortly after the end of the World War II. Adding to Shortland's challenges? She's shooting the drama entirely in the German.

Nele Trebs ("Die Tür"), Kai Malina ("The White Ribbon") and Ursina Lardi ("Songs Of Love And Hate") star alongside Rosendahl as the four other siblings with adults Hans-Jochen Wagner ("Everyone Else"), Sven Pippig ("Four Minutes") and Katrin Pollitt ("Anonymous") also involved. It's interesting to see Shortland has steered clear of any big names for her sophomore effort.

Liz Watts ("Animal Kingdom") is producing through her Porchlight Films shingle in conjunction with Rohfilm and Edge City Film. Lensing on the project began last week in the east German town of Görlitz (where Tarantino shot parts of "Inglorious Basterds"). Distribution for the film in Australia and France is already set to go. [ScreenDaily]
