Star Wars: Episode VII Cast

Well, so much for the speculation, now it's time to make it official. With a table read of J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode 7" happening this week, the cast has been officially revealed. And sorry Zac Efron, no role for you.

Instead, we're looking at a lot of names that the trades have already reported—Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, Peter Mayhew, and of course, the returning trio of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher—and there are some surprises too. Among them is mo-cap specialist Andy Serkis and stone cold veteran badass Max Von Sydow, along with rising actor Domhnall Gleeson and Daisy Ridley, who we've never heard of.

So, what will Disney share with fans on Star Wars Day this weekend? Perhaps the title?

"Star Wars: Episode 7" drops on December 18, 2015. Official press release and cast table-read photo below.

The Star Wars team is thrilled to announce the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

Director J.J. Abrams says, "We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud."

Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

    Peter Mayhew is 'returning' too.
It's attitudes like that that meant he didn't get a medal after the Battle of Yavin.

If jj abrams ruins this film, it'd be like finding out Derek jeter was a PED user!!!

  • Margaret Pomeranz | May 1, 2014 2:54 AMReply

Very excited to see John Boyega here. He turned in an excellent performance in the wonderful Attack the Block.

"Overwhelmed by all the support. This is the greatest day of my life. I'm told I can't say who I'm playing yet, but it's exciting!!", Ridley tweeted.

After all that hoopla about diversity they end up with a non-diverse cast? I mean why say it's gonna be a diverse cast if the best you can do is throw a token black guy in there? Like for real. I was expecting an Indian or Korean or something "diverse" to be part of the cast. I wouldn't have had these expectation if they hadn't claimed to be casting diversity to represent the current times.

  • Glowyrm | May 2, 2014 8:36 PM

Diversity just for the sake of diversity is stupid. If these are the people they need or feel are the best that they saw, then that's all that matters.

I'm not saying you don't think this or anything, just putting it out there.

  • rodie | May 1, 2014 3:03 AM

Isaac is from Latin American descent on both sides of his family.

  • Alex | April 30, 2014 7:01 AM

Adam Driver, Oscar Issac and John Boyega are all of different race...

  • bitter trekkie | April 29, 2014 6:56 PMReply

Driver and Isaac will be the ones I'm watching. Too bad Lupita wasn't cast. With just one new female role, I would have preferred an actress with more presence, so she could hold her own in this sausage-fest.

This will probably hit Deadline tomorrow, but fyi: Boyega is playing Jarko Calrissian, an ousted Bespin diplomat and relative of Lando.

  • Mohammed | April 29, 2014 6:13 PMReply

Soon enough Driver will run from "Girls" as a plague. And rightfully so.

  • bohmer | April 29, 2014 4:21 PMReply

Glad to see Oscar Isaac & Adam Driver.

why didn't they wait till sunday to announce the cast ?

MAY THE 4th BE WITH YOU et ectera

  • Pineo | April 29, 2014 3:15 PMReply

Lucas really went above and beyond to destroy the legacy of this franchise. First with those horrendous cgi edits to the originals, then with the miserable prequel trilogy. It's going to be very hard to redeem the series. Possible? Perhaps... likely... no.

  • Hedgey | April 30, 2014 5:36 AM

I absolutely agree with you, Pineo. Lucas should have left well enough alone. But, if Abrams can do for Star Wars what he did for Star Trek, who knows?

  • Mohammed | April 29, 2014 6:11 PM

He created it. He could take a lighter and gasoline to it and lit it. Create your own thing and do with it what you wish.

  • Joe | April 29, 2014 3:04 PMReply

Only one new female character added??!!! That sucks.

  • MAL | April 29, 2014 2:54 PMReply

Cool news, especially Serkis and von Sydow. And the photo of the reading is really kind of awesome!

  • PLease, GOD | April 29, 2014 2:54 PMReply

No Jar Jar Binks? There's still hope, right?

  • Ronny | April 29, 2014 4:55 PM

Jar Jar is the writer/director, in human form. If he does to Star Wars what he did to Star Trek, he will destroy Star Wars canon , perhaps the franchise itself, and will fracture the fan base. Some of us call his Star Trek films "abraminations"!

  • sarcastic jerk | April 29, 2014 4:08 PM

you think jar jar is not in this one

who do you think serkis is gonna play ?????????????????????????????

  • Manni | April 29, 2014 2:46 PMReply

So, no Lupita? That's too bad. Altough it's still some sausage fest for now (except Carrie F.), so maybe they'll come up with some MAJOR female characters soon...

  • Darth Reyzor | April 29, 2014 2:11 PMReply

    Lando?? Wedge??

  • D | April 29, 2014 1:28 PMReply

Fun to see Adam Driver here.
Few years ago Len Dunham sounded extremely proud when she was saying she'd never seen any of the star wars movies.

The rest of the cast is definitely stellar (seewhatadid).

  • Starwarscrazy | April 29, 2014 1:28 PMReply

    No Lando???

  • Freddie Rosen | April 29, 2014 1:26 PMReply
