We are the company we keep, and in the case of Wally Pfister, he and his professional cronies are some of the most iconic around. As DP alongside Christopher Nolan, his outlook working with key actors promises a certain atmosphere, a unique method. So here we are: a gloomy thriller trying to ground its at-times-daffy premise, emphasis on a grieving protagonist, with supporting turns from Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy. These aren’t rumored plot details from Nolan’s “Interstellar,” however. No, in mounting his feature directorial debut, “Transcendence,” Pfister has chosen to tackle familiarity head on, carving out a new arena for himself while rigging the grounds with pitfalls at every step.

Since their first partnership on 2000’s “Memento," the work of Oscar-winning DP Wally Pfister has helped shape and define the trademark style of Christopher Nolan and his output. His influence has proved so pronounced that Nolan’s upcoming “Interstellar” will mark an unclear break in DNA, it being “The Dark Knight” director’s first outing in 14 years without his usual collaborator.

The common complaints about movie marketing run the gamut from campaigns that give away for too much before the movie opens, trailers that spoil key moments in the film or just flat out inaccurate representations of what the finished product may be. But the thing is, marketing departments don't care about any of that stuff. Their only job is to make people interested enough in buying tickets on opening day—that's it. So if that means showing the sexiest part of the climatic moment in the film, so be it. Or in the case of Warner Bros., if it means making up dialogue to fit the tone of a trailer, that's what they'll do.

We’re nearly fifteen years into the 21st century and despite the frequent predictions of the implosion of cinema, the industry and medium is still going strong. While much has been made recently about the end of celluloid, a great deal of the best cinematic work in the past decade has been captured photochemically in addition to digitally as a new video on Vimeo can attest.

Stepping out from the shadow of Christopher Nolan, at the age of 52, to make your directorial debut, might have a lot of baggage and expectations attached to it, but Wally Pfister is ready for it. "If people are expecting Nolan-lite, I think they'll be surprised," he told the LA Times last month. "My training comes from Chris, but my emotional content comes from a different era. I'm steeped in a 1970s, pre-'Star Wars' period, films like 'Soylent Green.' Chris comes from a different place."

Transcendence Wally Pfister Rebecca Hall Paul Bettany
"....singularity, is a theoretical moment in time when artificial intelligence will have progressed to the point of a greater-than-human intelligence, radically changing civilization, and perhaps human nature. Since the capabilities of such an intelligence may be difficult for a human to comprehend, the technological singularity is often seen as an occurrence (akin to a gravitational singularity) beyond which the future course of human history is unpredictable or even unfathomable." So goes the the first couple lines of the Wikipedia entry on the subject, and the question is: can Wally Pfister turn that thematic material into a big screen, mainstream success in "Transcendence"?

Embarking on his feature directorial debut, Wally Pfister has employed one of the key tactics he's learned from his many years working with friend and collaborator Christopher Nolan: secrecy. Until now, much of the project was shrouded in mystery, but with a spring release date and a marketing campaign now getting rolling, the shroud is being lifted.

With “Monsters University” still making big bucks in the box office and advertisements for the upcoming “Despicable Me 2” dominating all forms of media, it will be interesting to see how much of a splash “Turbo” can make when it hits theaters two weeks from now. Dreamworks and Twentieth Century Fox certainly have their work cut out for them. They have just released a new trailer for the film and even though most of the footage is similar to the ones that came before, we do get more of a glimpse of the human characters that are in the movie.

While Wally Pfister is currently shooting his feature-length directorial debut "Transcendence," it goes without saying he has plenty of experience behind the camera. Of course, he's been a longtime collaborator with Christopher Nolan, lensing all of the director's films since "Memento," and before that, Pfister cut his teeth as a TV news cameraman. But that's not all he's done.
