Yep, it's a rumor story, but it's coming from Aussie site What's Playing who seem to have some well-placed sources and have been pretty good in the past. That said, proceed with the caution usually reserved for rumors.
First up, the site seems have gotten their hands on a character description making the rounds to agencies as casting begins for Clark Kent in "Superman: Man Of Steel" (as you might recall, filmmakers are looking for somebody aged 28-32 years old). In it, we find a very idealistic version of Kent as he's "a young journalist, traveling the globe, who would rather solve problems and help people without resorting to using his special powers.” And apparently, "the plot involves Clark getting involved in some sort of battle between two tribes in West Africa." It's definitely an updated take on the character and a somewhat refreshing one, finding him trying to do good without relying on the very traits that make him different. If true, we definitely like that direction.
Meanwhile, the site mentions that Anne Hathaway is in contention for Lois Lane. We're sure she is, along with the standard crop of actresses linked to these things such as Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Natalie Portman, Abbie Cornish, Michelle Williams, Scarlett Johansson etc etc etc who are all most likely names on a wishlist at this point. If we had our way Rebecca Hall would get the gig but expect Hathaway's name as the first among many to be put in the mix before a decision is made.
"Superman: Man Of Steel" is gearing up for a June 2011 start and will be directed by Zack Snyder under the watchful eye of creative godfather Christopher Nolan.

Michelle Monaghan would be perfect.

Just what I want a Superman movie to be...everything but him using super powers.
Why would you get Zack Snyder to direct an action-less movie?

It's about damn time Zach Snyder dealt with African civil wars in his films. If this is true, I fully understand why Aronofsky wanted more time to work with the Superman script.

This plot description sounds exactly like the graphic novel Superman: Birthright, which was actually established as the canonical Superman origin story for a couple of years. If this is an actual description of the plot, which I rather doubt, they need to credit this book as a major source of inspiration, if not adaptation. On the plus side, the book is one of the best and most popular Superman graphic novels out there, but it's take is more Clark Kent-as-a-cool-21st-century-guy, not anything especially bold in terms of the character of Superman.

Sounds more like Goyer's "big idea" is a Superman movie that is global and not just centered around Metropolis. "What if Superman did shit all over the globe and not just in the big city?"
I think Carla Gugino would be the best choice for Lois. We need a WOMAN and not a girl to play the role.

Lois needs to be a little feisty. Rebecca Hall, neither is Amanda Seyfried.
Anne Hathaway can be feisty. So can Keira Knightley...

The gloebrotting plot rumour sounds legit as David Goyer did EXACTLY the same thing with Batman half a decade ago.
