2014 Oscar Winners
...And that's it on another year. As always, the Oscars were both exciting, (mostly) sleep inducing, surprising and left us with lots to talk about. But it's late, we're tired and filled with nacho cheese, so we're going to be a bit brief for now.

2014 Oscar Selfie
What's up party people, here is your official Playlist Oscars 2014 live-blog, steered with reckless, and rosé-soaked abandon by me, Katie Walsh. I'm no awards pundit, or expert, but I am an enthusiast for fashions, celebrities, and live television mishaps, which is what these awards shows do best, as well as hand out shiny gold doorstoppers to the best and brightest of Hollywood. It's also a wonderful way to celebrate the end of what has seemed like an incredibly long and convoluted Oscar season (which really, is most of the year now), and tonight will no doubt be a great catharsis of all our collective anxieties, disagreements and heated opinions.

12 Years A Slave
The Independent's Spirit Awards are underway. "12 Years A Slave' leads the field with 7 nominations, while "Nebraska" is close behind with six, picking up nods in the same categories bar cinematography. "All Is Lost" has four nominations while "Inside Llewyn Davis" and "Frances Ha" made up the rest of the feature nominations, though missed out on other key nods (we're still shocked Greta Gerwig wasn't nomed for Best Actress). Winner as they happen below.

'The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug' & '12 Years A Slave' Lead 19th Empire Award Nominations

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
In a week's time, the Oscars will be over, but that doesn't quite mean the end of awards season, with a few stragglers — normally more populist than high-minded — following in the weeks and months after. Now in their 19th year, the Jameson Empire Awards — run by the UK movie magazine — are more MTV Movie Awards than BAFTAs, in part because they're voted for by the public. Read More »

Gravity and 12 Years A Slave
After a few weeks off from awards ceremonies, the two-week homestretch of the season, ahead of the Oscars two weeks from now, gets underway tonight with the 2014 BAFTA Awards. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts have, in recent years, become an increasingly convincing predictor of which way the Academy will go, though as ever, there's always some differences (last year, for instance, saw "Amour" star Emmanuelle Riva take Best Actress).

12 Years A Slave
So, we're in that quiet period of the awards season where the nominations are in, and the campaigns start making more measured moves as the Academy gets ready to vote on the Oscars. But with multiplexes mostly filled with the stuff studios would like to forget they financed, now is a good time to dive really deeply into the films and careers of some of this year's nominees. And if you wanted a comprehensive overview of the work of Steve McQueen, we've got a treat for you today.

12 Years A Slave
Fox Searchlight has had a pretty good last few days. On Thursday, "12 Years A Slave" walked away with 9 Oscar nominations, and then over the weekend, it tied "Gravity" for Best Picture at the PGAs, in a historic win that has our own in-house prognosticator considering what it means for the Academy Award race. Gravity 12 Years A Slave
The PGA Awards have been viewed as the most reliable predictor of the eventual Best Picture Oscar winner, and with good reason. Over the last 24 years, the Academy and PGA winner for Best Picture have matched 17 times, and more crucially, the last 6 times in a row. But what went down last night at the PGA Awards certainly won't be duplicated in March at the Dolby Theater.

12 Years A Slave
Whether or not he heard them on the actual night is still not known, but by now someone has told director Steve McQueen about Armond White's insults at the New York Film Critics Circle awards. The contrarian critic shouted, "You're an embarrassing doorman and garbage man” as McQueen went up to accept his Best Director award. The incident made headlines everywhere, and White was kicked out of the NYFCC as a result. As for McQueen, he's pretty much remained silent on it all, but it was only a matter of time before someone was going to ask.
