12 Years A Slave
The Independent's Spirit Awards are underway. "12 Years A Slave' leads the field with 7 nominations, while "Nebraska" is close behind with six, picking up nods in the same categories bar cinematography. "All Is Lost" has four nominations while "Inside Llewyn Davis" and "Frances Ha" made up the rest of the feature nominations, though missed out on other key nods (we're still shocked Greta Gerwig wasn't nomed for Best Actress). Winner as they happen below.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
In a week's time, the Oscars will be over, but that doesn't quite mean the end of awards season, with a few stragglers — normally more populist than high-minded — following in the weeks and months after. Gravity and 12 Years A Slave
After a few weeks off from awards ceremonies, the two-week homestretch of the season, ahead of the Oscars two weeks from now, gets underway tonight with the 2014 BAFTA Awards. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts have, in recent years, become an increasingly convincing predictor of which way the Academy will go, though as ever, there's always some differences (last year, for instance, saw "Amour" star Emmanuelle Riva take Best Actress).

Gravity 12 Years A Slave
The PGA Awards have been viewed as the most reliable predictor of the eventual Best Picture Oscar winner, and with good reason. Over the last 24 years, the Academy and PGA winner for Best Picture have matched 17 times, and more crucially, the last 6 times in a row. But what went down last night at the PGA Awards certainly won't be duplicated in March at the Dolby Theater.

12 Years A Slave
Whether or not he heard them on the actual night is still not known, but by now someone has told director Steve McQueen about Armond White's insults at the New York Film Critics Circle awards. The contrarian critic shouted, "You're an embarrassing doorman and garbage man” as McQueen went up to accept his Best Director award. The incident made headlines everywhere, and White was kicked out of the NYFCC as a result. As for McQueen, he's pretty much remained silent on it all, but it was only a matter of time before someone was going to ask.
