Frankly, we're surprised this didn't happen sooner. After decades of franchising that has led Charlie Brown and gang to shill for insurance, greetings cards, vacuum cleaners, root beer and more -- not to mention the countless TV specials, many of which are holiday classics -- "Peanuts" is finally getting the big screen treatment for the first time in decades.

It might not have lived up to the grosses of the Sam Raimi films (it lags nearly $100 million behind "Spider-Man 3" domestically, and more than the same amount behind "Spider-Man 2" internationally), but even so, Sony have to be pretty happy about "The Amazing Spider-Man." In a competitive summer, the film has taken a healthy $650 million worldwide, comfortably out-grossing fellow superhero reboots like "Batman Begins" and "X-Men: First Class." Perhaps Sony hoped for more, but it's about as healthy a relaunch of the franchise as they could have asked for, particularly given the dislike of "Spider-Man 3," and the mixed reviews of this installment.

The hopes and prayers of sci-fi geeks and cinephiles were answered yesterday as news officially came in that Ridley Scott's semi-"Alien" prequel "Prometheus" had landed an R-rating, as all four "Alien" movies did before it. The director had been non-committal about what rating he was shooting for, and even notoriously interference-happy studio boss Tom Rothman, in a sign of the new filmmaker-friendly side of 20th Century Fox, had promised that the film would "not be compromised," regardless of what rating it received. And so it came to pass: the MPAA have given it an R for "sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language," and it'll be released without a frame cut.

On Friday morning, writer-director James Cameron and producer Jon Landau hosted a screening of footage from the upcoming 3D rerelease of “Titanic,” Cameron’s 1997 Academy Award winner and box office record-setter. After screening 18 minutes or so of the film, which was painstakingly converted into 3D over a 60-week period, Cameron and Landau fielded questions from the audience and discussed the expansion of 3D into both the future and the past of the moviemaking industry.

Jada & Willow To Also Feature?It was in spring 2010 that word first cropped up about possible back-to-back sequels to the blockbuster "Independence Day," with shooting said to take place as early as this year. Well, that didn't happen, and megastar Will Smith went on to make another franchise sequel instead in the shape of "Men In Black 3," but once again, the sequels are rearing their heads. Director Roland Emmerich, who has long been saying that once a story is in place they'll move forward, teased during an interview with The Lantern earlier this week when he said, "I'd say hold tight. It's happening soon." And it looks like it is.

And it's based on characters from Edith Wharton's novel about a young girls' sexual awakening, "Summer." And no, we're not fucking kidding.

Originally airing in 2003, Mitchell Hurwitz's Fox sitcom has, over the years, enshrined its place as one of the great comedy series of all time, despite being canceled after three seasons. As the show's cast, which included Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Will Arnett and David Cross, went on to bigger things, the cult grew and grew, and rumors began to circulate that Hurwitz and the show's producer/narrator Ron Howard were planning to reunite the Bluths for a big-screen adventure.

We're not sure that there was a bigger surprise this year than "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes." A tired franchise, from a creative-interference-happy studio, with a green director and a plot straight from "Deep Blue Sea?" Even without the initially unpromising trailers, it looked like a late-summer flop. But happily, it was nothing of the kind: the film became easily the warmest-received blockbusters of the summer, launched director Rupert Wyatt onto the A-list, and has taken an impressive $400 million haul; not bad for a film that allegedly cost less than many of its tentpole competitors. A franchise was (re)born.
