Weekend Box Office: 'Apes' Dominates 'The Help'; One Franchise Reaches Its 'Final Destination'

All is forgiven between the public and the “Planet Of The Apes” franchise. This relationship seemed on the outs as soon as Tim Burton gave us Apebraham Lincoln a decade ago, but “Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes” has healed all wounds. While not keeping pace with that last Apeventure, 'Rise' has still taken only two weekends to cross $100 million at a much lower cost, a total no one at Fox was expecting. When the dust settles, this offering, which held well-enough to suggest strong word-of-mouth, will have outdistanced many of its genre companions from this summer, particularly those benefiting from the 3D price bump.

EXCLUSIVE: Earlier this year, during an interview with David Gordon Green, we asked about his Rough House Pictures production shingle, the company he formed with filmmaking pals Jody Hill, Danny McBride and Matt Reilly. He told us it's a place where the "strange ideas and concepts" they cook up or come across have a home to grow and develop. And it looks like those plans are starting to bear some fruit, particularly on television. Last spring, MTV picked up the animated series "Good Vibes" and this summer Rough House signed a one-year development deal with 20th Century Fox. Well, they certainly haven't wasted any time in getting things rolling.

“The Planet Of The Apes” saga is one of the healthier franchises in movie history. All the sequels occurred within a reasonable time frame, and while they were of varied quality, each one had their own separate reason to exist, and none were truly embarrassing. By comparison, the remake in 2001 was so far removed from the series’ original ethos that most won’t even acknowledge it as part of any continuity. Nevertheless, that atrocity opened to $68 million, which nears $100 million when adjusted for inflation. So while some may have been burned by the series thanks to Tim Burton, ten years might have been the appropriate time to reboot and still retain a base that remains aware of “The Planet of The Apes” as a sketchy form of “cinema history.”

There are quite a few screenwriters that we here at The Playlist think are incredibly overrated. Someone like Allan Loeb ("21," "The Switch") comes to mind, but Aline Brosh McKenna wouldn't be far behind him. She's a rom-com writing star, penning films like "27 Dresses" and "Morning Glory," though she hasn't had much critical success since "The Devil Wears Prada" in 2006. It's possible that she's moving away from her roots, as Deadline reported yesterday that she's signed on to adapt graphic novel "Rust: Visitor in the Field" for 20th Century Fox.

The numbers on “Cars 2” don’t actually matter, except for the stat-hounds regularly following the weekly box office noise (us!). “Cars 2” exists to facilitate Disney’s biggest merchandising cash cow, a multi-billion (annually!) property that needs no further justification. As Pixar seems like a studio that hopes to branch out into more ambitious directions (in theory), they will need something to keep the lights on when, and if, they should fail. Even if the reviews continue to be the worst ever received by a Pixar film, the “Cars” franchise will live on.

Perspective is necessary. $53 million is a whole lotta money. $53 million could buy several houses, it could feed many people, it could save lives. $53 million is also a pretty good opening for a somewhat higher-budgeted film, provided advertising isn’t through the roof and there aren’t a massive amount of back-end benefactors involved. But for “Green Lantern,” which cost upwards of $200 million before a massive ad campaign even by superhero standards, this is not a strong opening.

"Avatar" made lots of money. The "Avatar" sequels will make lots and lots of money. Fox likes money, so no surprise they want to keep the James Cameron gravy train rolling.

Call this one a victory for Paramount, and a big one at that. “Super 8,” which opened to $37 million, was advertised with only the slightest of peekaboos, an ad campaign that played less coy and more stubbornly mysterious. While the film was pitched on the name of Steven Spielberg, the filmmaker has his name on a lot of projects annually, and the wealth of offerings has become so consistent that it no longer tilts the needle.

Other Directors Apparently In Contention For The Gig Include, Justin Lin, Jose Padilha, Gavin O'Connor & Gary Shore20th Century Fox has a history and it's not always a good one. While Darren Aronofsky left "The Wolverine" project under the pretenses of family obligations, it's been reported that "Black Swan" director left the project due to lack of creative control. That coupled with the fact that Matthew Vaughn seems to have been put through the ringer by the studio on "X-Men: First Class" -- he was super rushed, was forced to use five different cinematographers, had to switch assistant directors and didn't know who his crew was on certain days -- and it's any wonder why anyone in their right mind would want to work on one of Fox's super hero films.

Since the start of the year, we haven't been shy about our opinion that "X-Men: First Class" seemed to be the most promising of the four superhero entries landing this summer. The cast is great, Matthew Vaughn looks ready to step up a level, and the trailers have been among the best-cut of the year. But things haven't all been rosy: rumors of a lengthy, chaotic shoot have been rife, and the posters have been as bad as the trailers have been good, while the most recent clip for the film seemed rushed and weightless.
