It's been continually teased over the past week, with Sony revealing they wanted a "21 Jump Street" sequel for 2014, and the news that original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were back to direct, and the movie just got even realer with an official release date announced today.

When a film like “21 Jump Street” winds up becoming such a huge hit ($200 million worldwide, to be more specific), the talk of a sequel is very much inevitable. But unlike many other films, thanks to the great chemistry between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, we welcome any news regarding a potential “21 Jump Street” sequel. And while directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have certainly kept themselves busy with the upcoming animated film “The Lego Movie,” it sounds like they are definitely on board.

After Sony failed to make good on its promise that the “21 Jump Street” sequel would shoot last fall, we were disappointed, but never truly doubted that we would be seeing a second film. You don’t just leave critically acclaimed and commercially successful stuff like that alone nowadays. Anyway, it looks like our faith has been justified, and a sequel is still in the works.

So how confident were Sony that "21 Jump Street" had the potential to be a hit? A month before the movie came to theaters, Jonah Hill revealed a sequel was already in the works, and a few weeks later it was reported that he was teaming up with Michael Bacall to pen the followup. And while it hasn't been formally announced that Phil Lord and Chris Miller will return to direct, it's likely we'll know more soon if everything goes according to plan.

It feels like only yesterday that we were talking about the best films of 2011, and yet here we are, nearly at the end of June, and we've seen pretty much everything that the first half of the year has to offer. So with the mid-point of 2012 nearly upon us, we thought we'd look over the best films we've seen in theaters over the last six months.

Who’s hungry? “The Hunger Games” proceeded to predictably beat the stuffing out of the box office, scoring $155 million, the third-highest opening weekend in history, and highest for a non-sequel. The fan base came out in full force, no doubt, but so did the normals, as the books don’t (yet) have nearly the support of “Harry Potter” or “Twilight.” But make no mistake, this property had a similar groundswell of opinion, including an ad blitz and news and web coverage suggesting this was the “good” version of those pre-existing properties. Within three days, Lionsgate has their highest grossing domestic release of all time, and Hollywood’s strongest new franchise. Because everyone secretly loves child murder.

On paper, "21 Jump Street" was not an enticing proposition. A reboot of a 1980s TV series with a ludicrous premise -- fresh-faced cops go undercover as high school students. Produced by Neal Moritz, a man whose last attempt at an action-comedy reboot of a famous property was the dreadful "The Green Hornet." Directed by two first-time live-action feature directors. Written by the man behind "Project X." And starring Jonah Hill, coming off a terrible R-rated comedy flop, in "The Sitter," and Channing Tatum, a man whose previous turns weren't so much performed as whittled out of wood.

It really doesn’t matter how popular a show was back in the day - as long as it’s a vaguely recognizable title with a good cast, you’re guaranteed a certain level of results. “SWAT” lasted only one year, memorable mostly for its theme song, and yet the movie version grabbed $37 million back in the summer of 2003. Nine years later, a similar opening has greeted “21 Jump Street,” the television show of which ran for four forgettable years in the late '80s and is more famous for spawning megastar Johnny Depp than for having any great story lines or standout moments.

Early results are looking good -- "21 Jump Street" is poised for a $30 million plus debut, unprecedented for a non-summer R-rated film (read our highly positive review here). Action comedies are a tough sell, but Sony handled this one masterfully, finding a way to guide an older brand name to massive appeal amongst younger audiences (plus hiring two smart directors who knocked the final product out of the park). And now they're ready to do it again, enrolling Jonah Hill and Michael Bacall (co-writer of "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World") to return for scripting duties on a sequel.

Hello all, greetings from the humid climes of Austin, Texas! I am reporting your weekly in theaters to you while taking a break from watching movies about rape, that take place in the woods, or are about long forgotten musical icons. Pro-tip: next year, submit a film that's about a camping trip gone awry, with at least one rape of any kind, co-starring, like, one of the members of Ace of Base or something. Let's sign some checks people! No, but the fest has been super fun and crazy as most fests are and should be. Also, I'm very busy with plans to start a charitable foundation for independent filmmakers who are in desperate need of tripods. The lack of tripods is an important issue that is facing our independent films today. But since you are not here (or are you?) let's get down to what's in theaters this weekend! This one is gonna be quick and dirty, 'cause I gots to go watch a crazy documentary.
