Spike Lee
You hardly need to be a daily reader of our humble blog (though if you're not, what's wrong with you?) to know that there are few filmmakers we are more eternally fascinated by than Spike Lee, despite, and let's be honest, often because of his predilection for pissing people off. Lee is an epochal figure even away from the feuds and the tiffs and the controversies; we will never forget just how awestruck we were when we first saw "Do the Right Thing" and went on to enjoy the fruits of the independent filmmaking scene that it pretty much revolutionized. If Lee had never made another film, he'd deserve our attention just for that. But of course, Lee has made other films, and if anything, the way he has subsequently swung wildly from near-genius ("The 25th Hour," "Malcolm X," "4 Little Girls") to what the what? ("Girl 6," "She Hate Me," "Kobe Doin Work"), and regularly visited all points in between, makes us even more interested in tracking his output.

It’s spring, the flowers have sprung, the air is clean and the breeze soothing. For sports fans, it means baseball season, whether it be the return of comparatively-overpaid major league players to our television sets, or the chance for some of us to shake off the winter doldrums and toss the ball around.

There may be snow on the ground, and the daylight hours are short, but believe us when we say spring is around the corner. And nothing says spring like the smell of the grass on the field and sound of a baseball hitting the bat. After watching the new trailer for the Jackie Robinson biopic "42," you might be eager to start oiling your glove.

If anything, the success of "Moneyball" last year has certainly brought about the revitalization of baseball-centered dramas. There's been no shortage of great ones in the past, from"Bang The Drum Slowly" to "Field Of Dreams" to The Natural," and now with the Clint Eastwood-led "Trouble With The Curve" and the Jackie Robinson biopic "42," we're definitely in for a fair slice of the genre in the near future.

Oh, Harrison Ford. As we documented in our Essentials feature in the summer, it's a long time since the actor, once one of the most reliable stars in Hollywood, has been on form. And it seems that every potential comeback, from "Hollywood Homicide" and "Crossing Over" to last year's "Morning Glory" and this year's "Cowboys & Aliens" has fallen short, even when, as in the last two cases, the actor's seemed to made more of an effort not to sleepwalk through the picture.

We guess Jack Nicholson was busy. He was the last actor named as a contender for the key role of Branch Rickey in the developing Jackie Robinson biopic "42," but it looks like another aging superstar may step up to the plate.
