No matter what you think of his movies, there aren't many people who give it to you as straight and unfiltered as Joe Carnahan. He's already shared his pitch reels for "Daredevil" and "Gemini Man," and he's frequently on Twitter sharing his thoughts on almost anything. So he's a pretty good choice for CineFix's "Hollywood Trenches" web series thing, and for the first episode (which is aggravatingly being portioned out in seven parts), Joe Carnahan sits down to candidly talk about his career. And so far, so good.

This Friday sees the release of "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters "starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the fairy tale brother/sister duo. The film shot in March 2011 (before Renner filmed either "The Avengers" or "The Bourne Legacy"), and was originally set to be released in March 2012, before Paramount pushed it back ten months to its current slot in the January wastelands. But 'Hansel & Gretel' is hardly the only case of a long-delayed film making it to theaters in 2013. For instance, "Gangster Squad" was pushed back from September 2012 to January 11th after the Aurora shootings, though it would have been a horrible film whatever time of year it was released. And the two are set to be followed by a fairly staggering twenty-five films from major studios that have already been pushed back somewhere between five and thirteen months, many of them accompanied by serious production troubles and well-publicized reshoots.

If things had gone according to plan, Keanu Reeves' "47 Ronin" would already be in theaters. But a troubled production has seen the movie's release date get bumped twice, as reshoots took place and the studio got involved with the editing process. Not always a good sign. And there are still more changes to come.

"I hate how difficulties in the process of putting together big-budget movies has been turned into bloodsport reporting, particularly when it is sort of accurate but exaggerated," Deadline wrote today with a pretty amazing lack of self-awareness. And while the actual truth of what is going on behind closed doors on "47 Ronin" likely won't be known except by those directly involved, it's hard to deny that the movie is going through some serious pains.

Jay-Z may have 99 problems, but you can bet he's glad "47 Ronin" ain't one. Universal's big budget samurai flick starring Keanu Reeves, Rinko Kikuchi and rounded out with a mostly Japanese cast has seen its problems displayed through ever changing release dates. Originally slated to open on November 21st of this year, it was optimistically bumped to February 8, 2013 back in the spring. But it seems as though concerns around the picture grew worse and the studio decided they need more time, as the picture has now been pegged with a Christmas Day slot next year. Whether it will hold or not remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain: director Carl Erik Rinsch's relationship with the movie is now over.

So, if Universal initially moving "47 Ronin" from November 21st to February 8, 2013 was a sign that they lacked faith in the flick, is this next manuever an indication they now, in fact, have big plans for it? You don't hand out holiday dates to just anything, and the studio has now moved the Keanu Reeves-led film to Christmas Day 2013.

Now Cannes is long in the rear-view mirror, and the LA Film Festival just underway, the next big event on the film calendar is, for better or worse, San Diego Comic-Con. Originally a small gathering of fans of science fiction and comics, it's now grown into a vast Geek Bonnaroo, taking around 130,000 guests across four days, making it the biggest such event in North America, and the fourth largest in the world. And for the last decade or so, it's been a centerpiece of the marketing campaign for major movies from virtually every major studio.

Reshoots: they're the new principal photography, it would seem. Every so often, a story will crop up that some major movie has reassembled its cast and crew for what's usually referred to as "additional photography." And it's easy for that to be blown up into some kind of scaremongering story, when in actual fact, it's hard to find a film that doesn't go back for more after the main bulk of its shoot has wrapped. More often than not it's for "pick-ups" -- filling in some gaps, fixing some scenes that may have had some technical issues. Sometimes it's to add a new ending, or new scenes elsewhere in the picture, which may have occured to the filmmakers once in post-production. Virtually every major movie budgets and schedules for a week or two of additional photography, and almost every successful movie of the last few years -- "Avatar," "The Avengers," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2," "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" -- had some kind of reshoots.

So, was it because of the reshoots that are apparently taking place on "47 Ronin" or to give the film more time to get the 3D looking right? Well, it depends on who you believe but either way, if you wanted to see the Keanu Reeves-led samurai epic, you're going to have to wait just a little bit longer.

While Atticus Ross is best known for his collaborations with Trent Reznor in Nine Inch Nails and of course on the soundtracks for "The Social Network" (which won them an Oscar) and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," he has ventured out on his own on more than one occassion. He has worked close with the Hughes Brothers, scoring their TV series "Touching Evil" (alongside his wife and brother, Claudia Sarne and Leopold Ross) as well as "The Book of Eli" and Albert's segment in "New York, I Love You." Ross also contributed to the excellent array of talent on the "Days of Grace" soundtrack. Well, he's once again striking out with a solo gig, and and it's one helluva blockbuster project.
