Ben Wheatley has taken viewers down dark paths with "Kill List," on blackly comic road trips with "Sightseers" and into a crime family trying to keep it together with "Down Terrace," but perhaps nothing can prepare us for "A Field In England." And these this new teaser trailer and TV spot reveal that if anything, it's going to be a experience probably unlike many other things you'll see this summer.

Many, including ourselves, tipped the latest film from Ben Wheatley, "A Field In England," to pop up somewhere in the Cannes line-up. After all, his reputation's been growing since his first two pictures "Down Terrace" and "Kill List," and "Sightseers" was on the Croisette last year. The film didn't appear in the line-up, but in a way, it didn't need to, because it already has its own plans; rolling out back in the UK in an unprecedented multi-format release that will see it hit cinemas on the same day that it's released on DVD & Blu-Ray, airs on VOD, and even screens on the free Film4 channel.

We knew that “X-Men: Days of Future Past” would be hopping between different time periods due to the nature of the story, but we didn’t know what those time periods would be. Well, we still don’t entirely (will the present-day stuff be pre or post “X-Men: The Last Stand”?), but we now know for certain that at least some of the film will be set in the ‘70s thanks to a new tweeted pic of a young Beast and age-unknown Wolverine together. It’s a pretty cool image and the ‘70s costumes look pretty great…although of course Logan’s still sporting that timeless jacket of his. This thing could still be an unwieldy mess, but we can’t help but be impressed by what Singer’s shown us so far.

We know we've droned on and on about Ben Wheatley for the past forever, and certainly the man's neverending stream of projects always keeps us on the tip of our toes. But for most of you out there, the only exposure you've had to the filmmaker has likely been through "Down Terrace" or "Kill List," and while there has been much ink spilled over "Sightseers," it spent most of 2012 on the festival circuit. Well, it's finally coming to theaters in the U.S. and a new trailer is here promising something truly unique at the movies.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" would open this year's Cannes Film Festival, still the most prestigious, and arguably most important event on the cinematic calendar. And today, March 14th, marks the last day on which films can be seen by the selection panel for the festival, which kicks off May 15th.

Ben Wheatley may be the most exciting and prolific filmmaker coming out of the U.K. right now. And the director is moving at an incredibly quick clip. At the beginning of 2011 he unveiled his shocking and disturbing hitman/horror film, "Kill List," and by the spring of the following year he had debuted his black comedy thriller follow-up "Sightseers" at Cannes. "Sightseers" hasn't even been released in the U.S. yet -- it will hit Sundance later this month -- but he's already got another film in the can called "A Field In England" (which he's described as a psychedelic period piece set during the English Civil War). And yes, it's coming soon too. During a recent Empire podcast, Wheatley said it would be finished in post-production by the end of this past December.

So, you want an idea of just how fast Ben Wheatley works? His latest "Sightseers" just hit theaters in the U.K. last week, but he's already shot his next feature, and we've already had one official still. Well, how about a poster?

Ben Wheatley is a busy guy. Even as we chatted with him at TIFF about "Sightseers," he was already in pre-production on his next movie, "A Field In England," which again finds him shifting gears in fascinating ways. A period movie that will be both in black and white and color, and a production that will find him building his own camera lenses from scratch, we can only imagine the final result will be a bit more trippy than this first image.

It's amazing to think that it's only been a couple of years since director Ben Wheatley first arrived on the scene with his sly, powerful British gangster comedy/drama "Down Terrace." And barely twelve months after that, he impressed even further with his horror-tinged follow-up "Kill List." The director seems to work at a thundering pace, and only slightly over a year after "Kill List" premiered at SXSW, he made his debut at Cannes with "Sightseers," another gruesome, dark tale, albeit with more belly laughs, about a caravanning couple (screenwriters Alice Lowe and Steve Oram) on a killing spree.

'Kill List' Director Ben Wheatley's Next Is Psychedelic Civil War Movie 'A Field In England,' Starts Shooting Next Month

If there's one thing that "Kill List," the outstanding domestic drama/dark comedy/gangster thriller/occult horror movie from earlier this year, taught us, it's that writer/director Ben Wheatley is beyond fearless. He boldly mixes genres and styles and comes up with something that is wholly unique and seemingly effortless. And this streak will continue, as it's just been announced that his next film will be a psychedelic U.K.-set Civil War movie called "A Field in England." It will begin shooting next month and will undoubtedly be really, really weird.
