Feel that morning chill? That's right, it's undoubtedly September, and film fans should be rejoicing. Goodbye and good riddance, August 2011, you were not one of those Augusts that defied the stereotype as the summer dumping ground. In the past few years, auteurs like Edgar Wright ("Scott Pilgrim vs. the World") and Quentin Tarantino ("Inglorious Basterds") boldly ventured into the month of August with varying degrees of success, and many hailed these maneuvers as groundbreaking for August's status. Well... August 2011 promptly set all right again with the dismal releases we've experienced.

'A Good Old Fashioned Orgy' Actor Martin Starr Talks A Fickle Industry & "Having A Huge Dick"

Since his breakthrough role as the deadpan “geek” Bill on the acclaimed but woefully ratings-deficient TV show “Freaks and Geeks,” Martin Starr has carved out a successful niche for himself playing characters who fortify themselves against the slings and arrows of the world with deadly, razor-sharp wit. But in his new film “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy,” Starr backs into that persona from a different point of view, playing a cool rock musician who is secretly paralyzed by quandaries as simple as whether or not to wear a hat on the cover of his debut album. When asked how much he could relate to in the new comedy, which was written and directed by Alex Gregory (a “Late Show with David Letterman” alum) and Peter Huyck, Starr confessed he shared more than a few similarities with his character Duquez, down to his physical description in the original script.

Considering "Horrible Bosses" has turned into a respectable late summer hit for SNL star Jason Sudeikis, it's a little surprising to see his next film "A Good Old Fashioned Orgy" (due out September 2nd) still flying under the radar. The film made its debut back in April at the Tribeca Film Festival where our reviewer called it a good update of the classic slob comedies of the 70s and 80s like "Stripes" and "Animal House." This writer also got a chance to check the film out at the fest and while it's not in the league with those films, it had a nice rough-around-the-edges charm that recalls the general looseness of that era. It's pretty much the antidote to slick big budget comedies like "The Hangover" and more in line with the low key ensembles in David Wain's work ("Wet Hot American Summer," "Children's Hospital").

It's summer, and by the looks of these latest posters, it seems the real graphic designers are on vacation and the interns are stepping in the while they're gone and they might have some explaining to do. The term "Photoshop disaster" is thrown around pretty liberally and sometimes without merit, but in these cases, it's the nicest possible way to put it.

Orgies, generally speaking, tend not to be most riveting stuff on film, as anyone who suffered through Tom Cruise’s winding, nonsensical journey to see wife Nicole Kidman Julienne Davis get violated by strangers in a country house whilst wearing a mask in “Eyes Wide Shut” will no doubt agree. You'd think the "raunchy" trailer for the Apatowian “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy” – which sounds like it was a good title before it was a good screenplay - would aim to explode this notion quicker than you can say “Fidelio” with an onslaught of middle-class thirty-somethings disrobing and engaging all kinds of bad behavior. As it is, there's little of that on display here: Tyler Labine takes his shirt off a couple of times and the principal cast have a round of tequilas. Wild.

'A Good Old Fashioned Orgy' Will Take Up Your Labor DayThat's right folks, with the 2012 calendar already filling up, studios are now beginning to look two years down the road at 2013 and start planting their tentpole flags. "Elysium," "Oz The Great And Powerful," "Iron Man 3" and "Oblivion" are just some of the movies that have staked out their territory and now they're getting some company.

The slob comedy, an invention of the American counterculture of the sixties and seventies that tore down movies’ perception of onscreen propriety, has miraculously survived in various forms since Bill Murray and his “Saturday Night Live” cronies started smirking on the big screen. Every time someone thinks that the influence of “National Lampoon’s Animal House” can no longer be felt, a film like “The Hangover” emerges, tapping into the zeitgeist and pulling in record-breaking numbers, further establishing the modern onscreen male as proprietor of snark, juvenile tomfoolery, and general bad behavior.
