A Most Wanted Man
The films of Anton Corbijn — well, the two he's made thus far, "Control" and "The American" — are marked by a careful, calculating style where every frame and every shot counts in the building of a particular mood or tension. And much of that seems the same in his next, "A Most Wanted Man," with the first trailer dropping today.

Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Philip Seymour Hoffman
With your empathies obviously in the right place, the question you might be asking yourself right now is: “Wait, Philip Seymour Hoffman was shooting 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2' as Plutarch Heavensbee recently. Will the movie be OK?”

A Most Wanted Man
Based on the novel by John Le Carré, and featuring a first rate cast including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe, Robin Wright and Daniel Bruhl, all under the guidance of director Anton Corbijn, it's hard to see how "A Most Wanted Man" could fail. And while it didn't quite do that, after premiering over the past few days at the Sundance Film Festival, reaction hasn't exactly been ecstatic for the slow moving, ponderous drama.

A Most Wanted Man
As the line between television and film gets blurrier, it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish exactly what makes something qualify to be a film at all. Particularly in the age of “Homeland” and “The Americans,” some may leave a slow-burning, understated spy caper like “A Most Wanted Man” wondering if it wouldn’t have been better served as a limited series on Netflix or HBO. And it will be a perfectly valid question. Based on the novel by John le Carré (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”), the film is the new anti-thriller from director Anton Corbijn and centers on the war on terror in Germany via a tapestry of several characters, chiefly Gunther (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a grizzled counter-terrorist intelligence officer stationed in Hamburg after a previous fuck up in Beirut.

2014: Sundance Most Anticipated
So yes, tomorrow brings the Oscar nominations (and you can take a look at our predictions one last time here). But if there were ever any doubt, there's a double reason that tomorrow might be the biggest day of the year in the movie calendar, because in a piece of scheduling that's somewhat infuriating to those of us who like sleeping occasionally, Thursday also marks the start of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Thirty years on from its founding, Robert Redford's little Utah get-together remains the premier venue for American independent film, and while the quality of the line-up remains... inconsistent, it also invariably sees the arrival of a whole host of movies that will be talked about for the twelve months that follow.

Given it's six months later, we're not sure if this is the same sizzle reel that debuted in the summer, but an international trailer for Anton Corbijn's "A Most Wanted Man" is back online. The film is set to debut at Sundance 2014 later this month, and while it wasn't in part one of our 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2014, check back on Monday and we bet you'll see it there (and for those keeping score it was there in 2013 too).

In the grip of the early winter blahs at the multiplex and with the blockbuster season just around the corner, it may seem that anything resembling a smart, adult drama is far, far away (this weekend's "Side Effects" being the exception). Well, not to fear, because Anton Corbijn is here and the "Control" and "The American" director is gearing up a new thriller, "A Most Wanted Man," and now we have our first look.

Even with only two feature films under his belt, photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn has become a director with a distinct voice. His debut "Control" was a startling look at the life of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis, while his followup "The American" placed George Clooney in a pretty nifty anti-thriller that favored mood over action. And so we couldn't be more excited about this next, the John Le Carré adaptation of "A Most Wanted Man." And with production now starting, a few more names an official synopsis have been revealed for the picture.

Anton Corbijn transitioned from music video directing/rock-photography to feature filmmaking fairly late in his career. First up, he combined his love of music and pictures with a biopic of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis that made a star of Sam Riley and followed that up with an adaptation of Martin Booth's novel "A Very Private Gentleman," which he turned into the existential hitman drama "The American" starring George Clooney. Corbijn Is now putting together the pieces for what could be his last hurrah, an adaptation of "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" author John le Carre's spy-thriller "A Most Wanted Man."

Robin Wright is in negotations to join Anton Corbijn's adaptation of John le Carré's novel "A Most Wanted Man." Quickly becoming one of our most anticipated projects of 2013 -- Corbijn's "The American" being one of the vastly underrated pictures of 2010 -- this political thriller centers on a Chechian Muslim who illegally immigrates to Hamburg and then gets caught up in the international war on terror.
