“Michael Perry, we would like to offer our condolences.” These are the first words of the “Into the Abyss” trailer, spoken by Werner Herzog to a young man about to be executed. Few things seem less comforting than the sound of Werner Herzog’s voice before death. But he can’t help it. That’s just how he sounds.

'Salmon Fishing In Yemen' Baits Spring Release DateWerner Herzog is having one helluva 2011. His 3D documentary "Cave Of Forgotten Dreams" has been an arthouse smash hit, still playing theaters (in Montreal where this writer is from, it was brought back for as second run due to popular demand -- that pretty much never happens) and in the best casting news of the year, Herzog landed the villain role opposite Tom Cruise in the thriller "One Shot." Just typing that out still makes our mind reel. He hit TIFF last month with his new documentary "Into The Abyss," and while Sundance Selects were going to wait until 2012 to release it, Herzog has twisted their arm to get into the theaters a little bit sooner. Like next month.

'The Ides Of March,' 'We Need To Talk About Kevin,' 'Carnage,' 'Wuthering Heights' & More Also IncludedWe're really getting into the thick of festival season by now. Telluride is long departed, things are winding down in Venice (we're here for another 24 hours, but it's starting to look like a ghost town), and The Playlist team head off to Toronto this afternoon. But there's plenty more on the way in the months to come. Only this morning, AFI Fest revealed that it would open with the premiere of Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar," and shortly afterwards, the full line-up for the 55th BFI London Film Festival has been announced.

Werner Herzog is a veteran documentarian, but for the most part, his films have either been explorations of nature or chronicles of oddball tales and people (sometimes all three), and usually imbued with his own fabrications/ecstatic truth (see the albino alligator at the end of "The Cave of Forgotten Dreams"). However, his next effort, the prison documentary "Into The Abyss," looks like it will find the filmmaker at his most straight-faced and sober in years.

TIFF and Venice already announced their first wave of titles last week, but don't fret, movie lovers, as today the good folks in Toronto have opened the curtain on their next batch of titles, focusing heavily on their Midnight Madness and documentary slate of programming. So let's get to the films you should be seeing, shall we?

Though he can be uneven at times, Werner Herzog's quest for ecstatic truth -- which can sometimes mean making up the existence of mutated albino crocodiles -- is always compelling, interesting and sometimes, just plain weird. But his next effort, if anything, should certainly be sobering.
