A Thousand Times Goodnight
Juliette Binoche playing a war photographer? That's probably anyone familiar with the actress needs to know about her upcoming "A Thousand Times Good Night," even if the results are a bit middling. In her review out of the Marrkaech Film Festival in December, our Jessica Kiang wrote that the film has the "enervating effect of so many fertile issues introduced only to be muddied into confusion or simply abandoned." But she also notes that Binoche herself is "particularly terrific."

A Thousand Times Good Night
When revered Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami cancelled his attendance at the Marrakech Film Festival due to ill health, the organizers could have had a further problem on their hands as he was meant, in addition to giving a masterclass, to be handing out the award at one of the “Hommages”—the tributes given to a filmmaker or actor in recognition of their body of work. However, that one headache didn’t occur here because the recipient was Juliette Binoche, practically the busiest actress on the planet, and Bruno Dumont, her director in this year’s “Camille Claudel” and himself the subject of a Marrakech masterclass, stepped into the breach instead. It’s a mark of just how constantly she is shooting, and with what calibre of filmmaker, that, throw a stone at a festival like this, and you’ll hit two or three people who have worked with Binoche, and probably recently.

A Thousand Times Good Night
How much does autobiography help or hinder a film's effectiveness? Norwegian director Erik Poppe's first English-language film, which played at the Marrakech Film Festival as part of the tribute evening honoring its star, Juliette Binoche, is avowedly based on incidents, and professional and personal quandaries the director himself experienced with one crucial change: Poppe switched the lead roles around so that it is Binoche who is his proxy, and Kingslayer Nikolaj Coster-Waldau playing the character based on Poppe's wife. That change is crucial to the final film and as it wears on, begins to look like maybe the best narrative decision that could have been made.

With the exception of the FX comedy “Wilfred,” Elijah Wood has kept a low-profile since the “Lord Of The Rings” trilogy ended, sticking to indies and genre fare, and he continues in that latter vein, joining the horror movie “Cooties.” Written by “Glee” co-creator Ian Brennan and “Insidious” scribe Leigh Whannell, the film stars Wood as “an unlikely hero [who] must lead a motley band of teachers in the fight of their lives against” elementary school students whom are transformed “into a feral swarm of mindless savages” after a mysterious virus hits. Commercial and music video director Ace Norton will be making his feature length directorial debut.

Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau will be best known to most for his role as the charismatic but despised Jaime Lannister on HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” while to the few he’ll be known for his intimidating turn in “Headhunters.” But it increasingly looks like that won’t be the case for long. Coster-Waldau was recently rumoured to be competing with “Lost” vet Josh Holloway for a role in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and now he’s set to star opposite Juliette Binoche in the indie drama “A Thousand Times Good Night.”
