There's no real joy in reporting on a massive bomb. Mostly because, why hate? Usually the participants involved will cry into piles of hundred dollar bills why you return to your menial workday job, gloating seems like a waste of energy. It's especially disconcerting when it comes from someone like Andrew Stanton, who previously directed "Wall-E" and was making his transition to live-action with the uber-expensive "John Carter." Analysts have been predicting doom for a long time now, in a way fueling the negative buzz with their irresponsible reporting, leading to a soft opening only slightly surpasses similar boys-n-sand actioner "Prince Of Persia," and that's mostly due to 3D prices.

You might not have noticed, but Eddie Murphy has a new movie in theaters today. That's a slightly loaded sentence: "A Thousand Words" was shot four years ago, has been barely screened for critics (those who have seen it have been vicious), and is being put into a mere 1900 theaters, nearly half as much as the week's biggest opening, "John Carter." And all this for a man who was once the biggest star on the planet.

Even though "Jack & Jill" scraped the bottom of the Adam Sandler barrel, proving to be one of the worst box office outings he's had in years, Sony still believes in the comedian. And why not. In 2010 audiences made "Grown Ups" the second biggest hit of his career (behind "Big Daddy") and the studio wants to keep that gravy train rolling. And now they've set a date.

Oh yeah, remember how everyone was talking about Eddie Murphy staking out a career comeback thanks to his first halfway decent role in years, in Brett Ratner's "Tower Heist"? Well, here comes a crushing reminder that the formerly funny funnyman has been phoning it in for years, and will probably continue do so. Lest we forget, one of his upcoming project is "Hong Kong Phooey."

Will You Want 'A Thousand Words' From Eddie Murphy After The Oscars?

So, is Eddie Murphy poised to make a comeback? Studio suits are certainly hoping so. With a role in Brett Ratner's "Tower Heist" that looks like a throwback to when Murphy actually used to be funny and with a hosting gig for next year's Oscars in the works, everyone is hoping the funnyman is done with family film paycheck gigs and ready to do something worthy of the comic chops he once so admirably displayed. While this writer has his doubts and thinks that Murphy will just continue to chase whatever movie gives him the biggest paycheck, others are more optimistic.

It's been so long since Eddie Murphy made a good movie, we've kind of forgotten that he used to be funny. Making his bank account bigger over the past decade in a string of increasingly shitty family movies, the days when Murphy was edgy comic with a unique and hilarious voice are now a far distant memory. And the actor now has yet another high concept, and probably poorly executed comedy and it looks like even the studio are throwing up their hands on this movie which has been sitting around for a while.
