There is a sub-canon of films about alcohol as deep and as dark as a barrel of bourbon, from "Lost Weekend" to "Days of Wine and Roses" to "Trees Lounge." "Smashed" casts Aaron Paul and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Charlie and Kate, a married couple in L.A. whose love is strong, full and, more to the point, well-saturated. Charlie and Kate like to drink, and it shows; Kate's mortified to have a hung-over vomiting fit while teaching, apologizing to her 1st graders and answering, falsely, yes when her kids ask if she's pregnant. When Kate is busted by her vice-Principal Mr. Davies (Nick Offerman, in a performance that in a just world would be an Oscar contender), she confesses her lies and he simply notes "That's… not good."

Every couple of years, a musician will either want to stretch his or her wings creatively and or realize that there's good money in composing soundtracks that beats slugging it out on the road. Recent converts that come to mind are Nick Urrata of DeVotchKa (soundtracks include "Little Miss Sunshine" and the terrifically underrated "Ruby Sparks," both as a movie and score) and Nebraskan producer/engineer, multi-instrumentalist and Bright Eyes member Mike Mogis, who's recorded and performed with The Faint, Rilo Kiley, Cursive, The Good Life, Jenny Lewis, and many more ("Lovely, Still," and "Writers" are two recent soundtracks he's scored with fellow Bright Eyes member Nate Walcott).

Where is Rosamund Pike finding the time? Fresh off of “Jack Reacher,” the actress is busy filming a significant role in Edgar Wright’s final instalment in the jokingly monikered ‘Blood and Ice Cream’ trilogy, “The World’s End.” Once she’s wrapped on that she’ll be reuniting with Simon Pegg on the set of “Hector and the Search for Happiness,” and she’s also attached to Stephen Brown’s “The Sea.” But not content with that busy schedule (and likely happy to capitalise on a sudden resurgence in popularity), Pike has added another project in the form of Pascal Chaumeil’s English-language debut “A Long Way Down.”

"Last night I ended up smoking crack." The Sundance drama “Smashed” starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and “Breaking Bad” star Aaron Paul received rave reviews earlier this year, especially from the performances of both lead actors. Our review from Sundance had praise for both thespians: "Winstead's bright, light charm has helped her in a run of films, but here she gets to crack it open to show dark rot underneath. Paul may be best known as "Breaking Bad" co-star Jesse Pinkman, but while Charlie also likes his vices a bit too much, his performance -- loving, gentle, lightly hammered -- is in a very different key than his work there."

Sometimes as a project moves along, casting is changed for a variety of reasons, and sometimes filmmakers have to settle on someone who maybe isn't as enticing as their choice. However, for the upcoming adaptation of Nick Hornby's "A Long Way Down," that isn't the case.

Over the past few weeks, we've had to say goodbye to a slew of our regular TV season favorites, and we've already listed our favorite 10 shows of 2011/2012. But there is still going to be some great stuff to watch over the next couple of months on the small screen.
